Thomas Barber (Yale College, 1762) was the son of the Reverend Jonathan Barber (Yale College, 1730) and Sarah, daughter of Doctor James Noyes, of Westerly, Rhode Island. He was one of three children born while their father was Superintendent and lay-chaplain of the Reverend George Whitefield's Orphan-House in Savannah, Georgia. Six other children were born at Oyster-Ponds (now Orient), Suffolk Co., Long Island, New York. At the time Thomas Barber was at Yale College, his father was the minister over the Congregational Church in Groton, Connecticut. His mother died, May 30, 1761, while in his Junior year.
