Thomas Barton was born on 1st June 1835 in Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. and died on 15th March 1901 in Omeo, Victoria, Australia.

Thomas Barton married Margaret Rath, daughter of Patrick Rath and Margaret (Tumilty) Hamilton on 16th October 1855 in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia. Margaret Rath was born on 13th June 1836 in Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia, and died on 11th July 1885 in Myrtleford, Victoria, Australia.

Thomas was baptised by James Watkins, M.A. when his parents were living at Maitland, New South Wales. He and Margaret were married on 16th October 1855 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Beechworth, by Rev. John J. H. Kennedy, and their marriage Certificate was 2429. He was 20 and Margaret was 18. His occupation was blacksmith. Their fathers' occupations were labourers. Both Thomas and Margaret gave their address as Three Mile Creek. Witnesses were her brother, John Rath, and Ann Johnston.

Thomas was unable to sign his name on his wife's death certificate.

Newcastle Shipping index lists Thomas Barton passenger ex Maitland on the brig Sarah July 16, 1851. Perhaps this was when Thomas left Maitland for Victoria.

Tom Barton was a blacksmith at Beechworth.

His death certificate states he lived 17 years in New South Wales, and 48 years in Victoria and that he died from haemorrhage, malignant disease of the prostate gland after suffering for 10 months. The informant was his son William of Nugong who signed his death certificate. Children listed on his death certificate were: Annie aged 39, Elizabeth aged 37, Thomas aged 36, Rose aged 34, Maggie aged 30, John aged 28 and Clara aged 26, Francis aged 24 and William aged 21.

He died in Omeo hospital, County of Benambra, Victoria aged 67 years.

His grave is in the Roman Catholic section three quarters of the way up from the gate in one of the middle rows and the inscription reads: In memory of Thomas Barton, died 15th March 1900 aged 67 years. All other official registrations give the date as 1901, so it appears the date on the grave inscription is wrong.

To obtain a birth certificate the number needed is V1835 388 121A.
