GEDCOM Note

Thomas Barton was born in 1862 in Myrtleford, Victoria, Australia, and died on 11th July 1893 in Harrietville, Victoria, Australia.

Thomas Barton married Sarah Hocking, daughter of John Hocking and Elizabeth Goldsworthy, on 23rd September 1891 in Bright, Victoria, Australia. Sarah Hocking was born in 1870 in Harrietville, Victoria, Australia, and died in 1939 in Richmond, Victoria, Australia.

Thomas (Tom) Barton and his brother Frank Barton found the Sambas reef.

When Tom married at the age of 29 he was a blacksmith as was his father. Tom and Sarah were married by Rev. John Samuel Woods at the Church of England. Witnesses were Frederick Hocking and Maggie Barton, Thomas' sister.

Tom died in a mining accident at the Sambas mine on 15th November 1893, aged 31 years, and an inquest verdict concluded that it was an accident. Tom's family received compensation. (Mining Accident Index)

Copied from The Alpine Observer: Friday 14th. July, 1893. On Tuesday last the Harrietville Gold Mining Company's workings were the scene of a terrible fatal accident, a young man named Thomas Barton being the victim. Some weeks ago the company decided on doing extensive surface prospecting, and several miners were employed to cut deep trenches near the main Omeo road on the company's lease. Barton and another man were working in one of these trenches on Tuesday, the banks being of loamy character. Owing to the heavy rains the soil had become loosened, but no danger was apprehended by the miners.

During the afternoon, however, a large quantity of earth became dislodged, and in an instant, without the slightest warning, Barton was completely buried. His mate gave the alarm, and willing hands were soon on the spot with a view to rescuing the unfortunate young fellow. An enormous quantity of earth had fallen, however, and it was with heavy heart the rescuers toiled on, all the time in danger of being similarly imprisoned. Darkness was just setting in as Barton's body was reached, and an examination showed that life was extinct. After two hours and a half of hard work the body was got out of the trench, and removed to Monk's Star Hotel pending an inquiry.

The deepest sympathy is expressed on all sides for the relatives of the deceased, who was married about two years ago, and leaves a widow and one child to mourn their loss. The funeral will take place on Saturday, having been put off to allow the deceased's parents to be present. An inquiry was held on Wednesday, when a verdict of accidentally killed was returned.

Tom is buried in an unmarked grave just inside the gates of Harrietville cemetery next to Albert Newman.

The Sambas mine was the only mine still operating at Harrietville in 2005.
