About Thomas Bell
"My greatgrandfather, Thomas Bell, went to Chile circa 1870. He married Elisabeth Beaver in Valparaíso, an English girl from Wallasey (Merseyside) in 1871. My grandfather John Robert Bell was born in Valparaìso on Sept. 8th 1885. He married Graciela Matte Hurtado. They lived in Los Andes for a while. They are the parents of my auntie Eliana (Nana) Bell Matte born in 1911: step sister to my father John David Bell who was born in Montevideo in 1931. These early Bell contingent from around 1870 went to Chile on the expansion wave of the Industrial Revolution II. They sailed to Valparaìso from Liverpool and mainly worked as naval engineers. My grand uncle Jimmy Bell sunk in the Arequipa in 1902. He was working at the engine room. I hope this info may contribute a little in this outstanding genealogical project, and strongly believe my ancestors will be proud to feel part of it.
