About Thomas Blatchley

not-so-brief biography

Thomas Blackley (Blatchley, Blacksley) embarked for New England in the "Hopewell," July 28,1635, age 20; was granted a lot in Hartford conditionally, Jan. 7, 1639-40; removed to New Haven, 1643; was at Branford in 1645; signed the "fundamental agreement" of the settlers of Newark, in Oct., 1666, but remained in Connecticut; in his latter days he was at Guilford, and died in Boston, probably on a trading visit, about 1674. His widow, Susanna, afterwards married Richard Bristow, of Guilford.

THOMAS BLATCHLEY, the Immigrant, was born in 1615. He was a member of St. Giles Cripplegate Anglican Church; however, it is possible he was from northwestern England, such as Hertfordshire. Most of Hartford and Branford, Connecticut settlers originated from there.

  • Emigrated July 28, 1635 Vessel - Hopewell, Captain Babb, 1635 Mercantile Business. Military Service in The Pequot War-1670, awarded 60 acres for service

Thomas Blatchley [Gen 13] married Susanna Ball [daughter of 15618 Alling Ball & Dorothy Tuttle]

Thomas is earliest known ancestor in this branch of the family. Almost all of our information on this family is from secondary website sources; I am presenting what we have found, but cannot say anything about the accuracy of the information.

7808. Thomas Blatchley was born in 1615 in London (Hertfordshire) England [some say Wales], and died 15 Feb 1673/74 in Boston (Suffolk) Massachusetts. He married 5 Jun 1643 in New Haven Co, Connecticut,

7809. Susanna Ball. Susanna was born 1625 probably in England, and died 16 Dec 1677 in Connecticut.

The name Blatchley is Anglo-Saxon, and is related to Blacksley, Blachly, etc. The meaning of the name is uncertain; some sources say it refers to an occupation, where "Blatch" = bleach. Others have it as a place name, referring to a Black Lea (dark meadow). The earliest known appearances of the name are in Lancashire in pre-Norman times, but whether it refers to an occupation or a place (or both), there could be many unrelated Blatchley lines in England.

Thomas came to America in 1635 on the "Hopewell". His name is seen spelled Blachley in places. He was residing in Hartford, Connecticut by 1640, and was in New Haven, Connecticut by 1644. He served as a member of the militia during the Pequot War (about 1637).

Thomas and Susanna were planters, and were Anglican. Thomas was also a merchant. He signed the agreement of 20 Oct 1666 founding Newark, New Jersey, but it appears they never moved there. He was residing in Branford, Connecticut at the time of his death, although he died in Boston -- he was probably there on business. After his death, Susanna married Richard Bristow; there were no known children from this marriage.

Thomas and Susanna had four children:

7808.1. Aaron Blatchley (1644 CT - 1699 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.

7808.2. Abigail Blatchley (~1648 CT - ~1725 NJ) had descendants and is expanded below.

7808.3. Moses Blatchley [3904] (1650 CT - 1693 CT) and Susanna Bishop are direct ancestors, separate page.

7808.4. Miriam Blatchley (1653 CT - ~1705 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

Thomas Blatchley (son of Thomas Blatchley) was born 1615 in Colerine, Wiltshire, England,

At about age 20, he sailed from London on 28 July 1635 in the “Hopewell”. He probably landed in Massachusetts, but by 1 May 1637, he was at Hartford, Connecticut.

Thomas was one of the initial soldiers signed on for the first Pequot Indian War.

Thomas Blatchley’s will was dated 28 September 1668, and it was probated in May of 1669. There is some confusion as to whether he died in Branford, Connecticut in 1672, or in Boston in December of 1674, perhaps on a business trip.
