BLOOMFIELD

A Derivative Surname

The name was originally French, coming to England from Caen, Normandy, and perchance is to be associated with William the Conqueror, 1066, though the name does not appear in "The Roll of Battle Abbey."Its most prevalent form in England was "Blomefield," "from Blomville, near Caen," (BARBER, British Surnames, p. 97). Of course from the same authority it appears that "Bloom" is interchangeable with "Blum" and many other variations.

When ABRAHAM SHOTWELL of Elizabethtown was banished before or in 1675, "His property was sold at public auction, Aug. 25, 1675, for œ12, to THOMAS BLUMFIELD, carpenter, of Woodbridge, who resold it, a fortnight later, for œ14 to Gov. Phillip Carteret," (HATFIELD, p. 93).
