About Thomas Boake
The beech tree: a history and genealogy of the Boake family of England, Ireland, America and Canada from 1333-1970. By Dorothy Sue Boake
The family emigrated to Ireland settling at Cappanerin in Queens County in 1693.
In 1719 they moved to Edenderry and rented property where Thomas engaged in the blacksmithing trade. On 8th August 1727 a Removal Certificate from Edenderry to Carlow indicates that the family moved to the active Quaker community of Ballitore which was within the compass of the Carlow. In Ballitore, Thomas rented a house and mill from Henry Fuller, a leasehold of 100 acres. This mill was probably a woollen mill, although flour milling was also an occupation engaged in by the Quakers at Ballitore. Thomas Boake 's son, John, was occupied as a wool comber' in 1743 which leads one to surmise that the family was engaged in the woollen business at that time.
