A first cousin was the well-known Australian poet, Henry Kendall.
Thomas and Mary Bowden made their home at "Newlands", Parramatta.
"Newlands" was built in 1840 by Samuel Marsden's daughter and her husband, Thomas Marsden, who was also her cousin. The house was built on a block subdivided from the original 112 acre holding, which had been bought by the Reverend Samuel Marsden in 1835, and where he built his home "Newlands House". ("Newlands" was bought in 1908 by the Kings School, who changed its name to "Brighton House" - it was about 1860 when Thomas Bowden lived there.
