Thomas Boyd of Kilmarnock

Thomas Boyd, 4th feudal Baron of Kilmarnock; Dnus de Kylmornowe was born about 1385 in Dean Castle, Kilmarnock, county Ayr, Scotland, and died there on 7 Jul 1432 Scotland.

Parents: Robert Boyd, 3rd Baron of Kilmarnock, b: ABT. 1360 in Kilmarnock, Renfrew, Scotland and Alice Gifford, b. bef. 1350 of Yester, Peebles, Scotland. {n.b.: father is variously given as Thomas Boyd, 3rd Lord of Kilmarnock, or Robert. Check this.}

1. married: Joanna Montgomerie, Baroness Boyd. She was born 1378 in Of Ardrossan, co. Ayr, Scotland, and died in of Dean Castle, Kilmarnock, of Ayr, Scotland. She was the daughter [fifth child, variously called Joanna or Janet] of Sir John de Montgomerie, Laird of Ardrossan and Elizabeth de Eglington, Lady Ardrossan. [5572]

Notes

Sir Thomas Boyd was "a man of distinguished abilities who made a great figure during the reign of King James I." He was one of the sureties, or hostages, for the ransom of King James I in 1423 along with Sir John Montgomerie of Eaglesham and Eglinton (usually designed "of Ardrossan").

In 1406 James Stewart became heir to the throne of Scotland, but was unable to claim it for nineteen years as he was held prisoner by the English in the Tower of London. The King was released by the English on the promise of the Scots to pay a ransom of 40,000 pounds. He then ascended the throne in 1424. Sir Thomas was one of the hostages handed over to the English as security for the payment.

Sir Thomas was delivered May 28, 1424, and was released July 16, 1425. He was probably compelled to pay his own ransom. At the time he was delivered as hostage, his annual income was estimated at 500 marks.

He was confined in Dover Castle, being sent there from Fotheringay, and later exchanged at York Castle 16 June 1425. The King was released on the promise of the Scots to pay a ransom of 40,000 pounds, which was never made. The King wasted the money that was raised for it and the many hostages held in the English prisons.

Whether Sir Thomas ever returned home alive we do not know. He was buried with his wife in the old kirk at Kilmarnock, their tomb bearing the inscription:

Hic jacte Thomas Boyde, Dominus de Kilmarnock. Qui ojijt septison die mensis Julii 1432. Et Johanna de Montgomerie eius spouce Orate pro iis

The old kirk collapsed in 1800, and was replaced by the present Laigh Kirk. [580,5565]

[1] William, Abbot of Kilwinning, obtained from King James III a charter confirming grants of the Crown to the Abbey. William had a dispensation from Rome, and received grants of land in Lanarkshire. These descended in lineal succession until sold by the late Reverend William Boyd, D. D., father of the Edward Boyd of Mertin's Hall, County of Wigton, Scotland. Their Arms are the same as the Kilmarnock family.
