About Thomas Butler

Thomas Butler, son of Thomas Butler & Sarah Stone, b. 1661, d. August 23, 1725; m. August 6, 1691 at Hartford to Abigail, daughter of John and Rebecca (Greenhill) Shepard.

Thomas Butler, was born in Hartford. He and and his older sister Sarah were treated by Dr. John Winthrop Jr. August 21st, 1666 and states Thomas was four years old and Sarah was eight.

October 30th, 1692 Thomas Butler owned covenant, First Church of Hartford and April 12th, 1696 he was admitted to full communion.

Thomas Butler presented to the court at Hartford an attested copy, under the hand of the Clerk, bearing date 5 Jul 1690, of the distribution of the estate of his father Thomas Butler, late of Hartford, dec'd, and the original distribution not being entered in the court roles, the court ordered the copy to be recorded.

December 1st, 1712 Administration of the estate of Samuel Butler of Hartford granted to the widow Hannah and brother Thomas Butler.

Butler, Thomas, Hartford. Invt. £625-14-00. Taken 12 November, 1725, by Capt. John Sheldon, Ensign Nathaniel Goodwin and Samuel Welles. Will dated 23 August, 1725.

I, Thomas Butler, do give unto my well-beloved wife Abigail 1-3 part of all my personal estate forever, and the improvement of 1-3 part of my real estate during life. I give unto my son Isaac, whom I brought up to learning, besides what I have already given him, 20 shillings. I give to my son Daniel Butler 1-2 of the lott called Brick Hill lott, containing about 7 acres. I give him 1-2 of my lott called Goodman's lott. I give to my son Daniel and his heirs forever. Item. I give to my son Thomas Butler 1-2 of my lott called Brick Hill lott. Also I give my son Thomas 1-2 of my land called Goodman's lott. Item. I give to my son Elisha my home lott and all the buildings thereupon and appurtenances thereto belonging. Also I give to him a piece of land at the Blew Hills called Spring Brook, about 15 acres. I also give to Elisha the land adjoyning to my home lott which I bought of Tixwell Endsworth, about 4 acres. The forementioned parcells of land I give to my son Elisha and his heirs forever, and my will is that my wife shall have the improvement of Elisha's lands, houseing and what shall be given him for to bring him up until he come of age, if he live so long, and also to help bring up my daughter Elizabeth. Item. My will (is) that what my daughters, (viz.), Abigail, Deborah, Sibel and Vilot, have got by their industry shall not be inventoried as any part of my estate. Item. My will is that Daniel shall have, and I do give to him, one yoke of oxen and my youngest mare of 3 years old past. I appoint my wife Abigail and my son Daniel to be executors.

Court Record, Page 109 — 7 December, 1725 : Will now exhibited by Abigail Butler, the widow, and Daniel Butler, son of sd. deed., execu- tors named in the will. Proven. Invt. exhibited and allowed.

Page 126 — 5 April, 1726: The executors exhibited now an account of their executorship, which this Court accepts. Order to dist. the estate according to the will : To the widow and children. And appoint John Shelding, Robert Sandford and Jonathan Butler distributors. And this Court appoint Daniel Butler guardian to Thomas Butler, a minor, 15 years of age. Recog., £100.

Page 143 — 3 January, 1726-7: Report of the distributors. And this Court appoint Abigail Butler, widow, to be guardian unto her children, viz., Elisha, 10 years, and Elizabeth, also 10 years, children of the deed.

Thomas Butler and Abigail Shepard were married August 6th, 1691 in Hartford, they had five sons and seven daughters all born in Hartford, and all Christened in First Congregational Church of Harford;
