About Thomas Cadwell
It is known that he was in Hartford CT. in 1652, located in Front Street. He married, in 1658, at Hartford, Elizabeth Stebbins Wilson, widow of Robert Wilson and daughter of Deacon Edward Stebbin(s). Thomas Cadwell lived on a portion of Deacon Stebbins' home-lot on the corner of what is now Front and State streets. He was a constable in 1662 and licenced to keep a ferry in 1681.
Thomas Cadwell is believed to have been conducting a private ferry at Hartford in 1652. At town meeting, 22 December 1681, the convience and necessity of having a public ferry at Hartford was considered. A committee was appointed to agree with a suitable person to keep the same for seven years. Thomas Cadwell was the man selected. As his warehouse was at the landing and his house after 1652, at the southwest corner of State and Front streets, this service would have been convient for him. His agreement dated 31 March 1682 states that he was "to maintain a suffitiant boate ffor the passage of horse and man; a canoe good and suffiant to carry over a single person". Thomas Cadwell was thus the lessee of the ferry privilege though not necessarily the ferryman. He agreed that it should be carefully attended. His widow, Elizabeth, succeded him for one year and then his son, Thomas.
