About Thomas Calvert
Thomas Calvert was the son of John Calvert, of Mooresome, Yorkshire and his wife Grace. Thomas Calvert was born in 617 at Legacory , near Lurgan, Co. Armagh. He married Jane Glasford, in 1647.
Jane’s father, Hugh Glasford was born about 1594 at Stranmillas, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland. His wife was named Margaret. Their only child of record, Jane, was born about 1626, Stranmillis, Antrim, Ireland. Thomas and Jane were members of the Society of Friends, (Quaker) religion. John and Jane soon left Ireland for Pennsylvania, settling on 300 acres in Delaware Co.
There are family stories, unproven, that Thomas may be related to Lord Baltimore from Moorsham, Yorkshire. In the latter part of the 17th century there was a presumption that a relationship existed between Ann and the Lord Baltimore for on June 4, 1735, Samuel Hollingsworth made a deposition before the mayor of Philadelphia in connection with a land dispute between the Penn's and Lord Baltimore. There is a tradition in the family that Penn knew of this relationship and asked Valentine to invite Thomas Calvert to come and settle in Md. Penn needed the clout of the Calvert's.
