About Thomas Campbell

Thomas Campbell 1764 - 1825

Thomas Campbell was born on December 26, 1764 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He later removed to Blount County, Tennessee and then to Illinois. He died there in the Ursa Township area of Adams County, Illinois during the year 1825. He married Sarah Wilcox in Blount County, Tennessee about the year 1793. Thomas and Sarah Campbell had 12 children, the eldest being George Campbell born on February 10, 1794 in Blount County, Tennessee. Thomas, along with his wife and eldest son George, came to the Adams County area of the Illinois Country in the year 1823-24 and erected a Log Cabin on George's Claim, in the north east quarter of Section 31 near what was to become known as "Walnut Corners" in the Bear Creek Territory of Adams County, Illinois.

Besides George and his parents, four sons of Thomas and Sarah Wilcox Campbell, namely; David, Joseph, Claybourn and Russell, plus one daughter followed them to Adams County, Illinois in 1824-25. David Campbell married Sarah Worley on June 29, 1826 in Adams County, his brothers Claybourn and Russell, married sisters with the surname of Nelson and their sister Rebekah and Robert Baity/Beatty were issued a license to be married on March 30, 1816, in Blount County, Tennesse, all the rest were married in Adams County.

Thomas Campbell and his wife Sarah are buried in the Denson Pioneer Cemetery at Ursa, in Adams County, Illinois. A memorial Grave Marker in the south west corner of the Denson cemetery, placed there by the village of Ursa, Illinois, simply states that Thomas Campbell was from Blount County, Tennessee, his date of birth and death and that he was the father of George Campbell, plus the historical fact that his death and burial were the first for a white settler in the Ursa Township area of Adams County, Illinois, then known as the "Bear Creek Territory".
