GEDCOM Note
Information on Joshua Canterbury and his descendents received from Jerry Canterbury. I have not checked out the information.
I have also received information on Joshua Canterbury and his descendents from Gordon Lacy. Again, I have not personally checked out the information.
Per Gordon, Joshua's will was probated on 18 June 1878 in Monroe County, WV.
Per Ken Canterbury Joshua died Oct 22, 1877 and he lists source as: Monroe County Death Records. Ken also provided the following write up.
Joshua and his children spelled their names as Canterberry. In this paper I am useing Canterbury. Joshua was a farmer and inherited the Canterbury farm above the waters of Back Creek. He purchased an additional 119 acres from Henry and Rhoda Miller on November 21,1846. (Source: Monroe Deed Book P, page 483). When Joshua reached 85 years of age he recorded his will at the Monroe County Court House in Union. The will which was probated on February 7,1877 stated that he had sold his farm to sons William L and John H Canterbury. He left instructions that nine of his ten children were to receive the sum of three hundred two dollars and seventy six cents each and that he had given his daughter Mary Jane all that he intended for her. Joshua appointed his friend W.W.Pence as executor of his will.(Source: Monroe County Will Book 11,page 38). When son Andrew of Fayette County died two months after the will was probated Joshua filed an updated will on June 18,1877. Joshua died four months after his second will was probated. The cause of death was listed as pneumonia. (Source: Monroe County Death Records,Book 1,page 38). Mary died in 1874. Joshua and Mary are buried at their homeplace in the Canterbury Cemetery located approximately two miles up the mountain near Back Creek. To reach the cemetery from Greenville drive east on route 122 and go approximately 1.6 miles past Back Creek Road and turn left onto the Ashbury Farm. The farm road up the mountain is on Ashbury private property but there is a right of way to the Canterbury Cemetery which is also on private property. Drive six tenths of a mile up the dirt road(which is very rough) thru 2 steel gates and park at the third steel gate which is locked. Cross the third steel gate and walk about one and one half miles around an old logging road toward Back Creek. Come to the remains of the stone chimney/fireplace which was a part of John,Joshua,William, and Henrys' log house. Walk across the field and turn right at the fork and walk about 200 yards up the point to the Canterbury Family Cemetery. The cemetery is fenced and well maintained. It contains twelve graves including three which are unmarked.
