Death of Capt. Carothers
A Confederate Veteran of York County Passes Away
Special to The State
Rock Hill, June 16 - Capt T. M. Carothers, a well known and one of the most highly esteemed farmers of the county and brave veteran of the Lost Cause, died at his home in the Indianhook community, near the South Catawba River, about 5 o'clock Thuesday morning.
For several years Capt. Carothers had suffered from cancer of the face but until a few days prior to his death he was able to be up and look after his affairs on the farm. His condition became much worse, however, last Friday and he gradually grew worse until the end came. He was unconscious from Friday until Monday, but he regained consciousness on Monday and remained perfectly rational almost to the last moment.
The funeral was held at Ebenezer church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. J.H. Thornwell, pastor of the deceased, officiating, after which the remains of this brave old soldier were laid to rest in Ebenezer cemetery.
Capt. Carothers was 74 years of age at his death and was born and lived all his life, except the four years he spent in the war, in the same community in which he was living at his death. He was strickly honest in all his dealings with his fellowmen and lived a pure and upright life - a man for whom all his acquaintances had the highest respect.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 21 2023, 22:34:11 UTC
