About Thomas Chandler, I

Thomas, born circa 1475 at Bishop's Stortford, had an unknown wife who was buried in 1514, when he was charged for 'waste of torchis' at her burial. Thomas was a chaundler, or candle maker, of Bishops-Stortford, a churchwarden there in 1521, 1522 and 1536. He was living 19 Mar 1548 and died between 1548 and 1551.

Chandler Family researchers have nothing that would agree with the statement that he was the son John Chaundler and Jane Gitton, and married to Mary Agnes Tate.

concerns

From his Find A Grave memorial (link below): "Chandler Family researchers have nothing that would agree with the statement that he <this Thomas> was the son <of> John Chaundler and Jane Gitton, and married to Mary Agnes Tate."

notes

warden of St Michael's Church, St Albans in 1521, 1522 and 1536

comments

Given name has also been (apparently erroneously) reported to be Thomas Graham.

Date of birth might be 1468 or 1475.

probable close relative (maybe brother?) of Agnes Basse - further research is warranted

Lord? (if so, was he a baron, or a feudal lord?)

supporting data

From an unidentified source: "<This> Thomas was from the eastern Hertfordshire hamlet of Bishop's Stortford. At the time of his birth in 1475, England was enjoying a respite from the turmoil of the Wars of the Roses, with the White Rose King Edward IV more or less secure on the throne. Just 4 years before Thomas's birth, about 15 miles to the southwest, had been fought in the fog the bloody Battle of Barnet. We can speculate that Thomas's father, whose identity we do not know, might have been involved."

BIOGRAPHY: "The succeeding generation [to Robert Chaundler of Devizes]seem to have taken a rather too active part in the politics of their day,for we find that on 27 August, 1465, the king (Edward IV) commissionedThomas Yonge, John Butler, knight, and others to, to enquire into the casof John and Thomas Chaundeler, of Wilts, then prisoners in Gloucestercastle (Paten Roll, 5 Edward IV, memb. 22). It is certain that theChaundelers were partisans of the house of York; but the cause of theirfavour with crown can only be surmised. Further light is thrown on thesubject by a crown grant of 18 February, 1466, by which Thomas Caundler, the 'parson' or the parish church of Menestake (Meon-Stoke) in thediocese of Winchester (and not very far from Wilcot), is given a canonryin the king's free chapel of St. STephen in the palace of Westminster, and a prebend in that chapel (Pat. Roll, 6 Edward IV, memb. 15). Thomasbeing a priest the line of descent would be through John, who, there canbe no doubt, was father of John Caundler of Oare, living 1524."
