About Thomas Chandler, of Bishops-Stortford

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chandler-116

Category: Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire

Disambiguation Notice: Do not merge Momfort-1 and Momford-1. Momford-1 ought to be Joane Unknown. Her husband Thomas Chandler-116 is not a duplicate for Tobias Chander-100, and the children of these two couples are two distinctly different families.

Thomas Chandler was born abut 1528, probably in Bishops-Stortford. He was buried on 4 Jun 1611 in Bishops-Stortford, age 83. He married Joane Unknown. She was buried on 11 Mar 1606/7 in Bishops-Stortford.

He was a churchwarden in 1562, 1563 and 1574.

Children of Thomas Chandler and Joane:

The births, baptisms, deaths and burials are provided by Moriarty, G. Andrews, "Ancestry of William Chandler of Roxbury, Mass.," New England Historical and Genealogical Register 85, 1931.

Thomas Chandler was church warden at Bishops-Stortford in 1562, 1563, and 1574. He left no will and as the parish registers do not give the names of the parents of infants baptized prior to 1580, the names of all his children cannot be given with certainty; but there is proof that he had at least three children, Barbara, Henry, and Edward. Ancestry of William Chandler of Roxbury, Mass" (NEHGR Vol.85(1931))

Joan Page, daughter of John and Katherine (Unknown) Page, was born say 1530, at Broughing, Hertfordshire, England. [1] She married, say 1550, Thomas Chandler of Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England. [1] [2] "Following their marriage, Thomas and Joan Chandler resided at Bishop's Stortford." [1]
Thomas and Joan (Page) Chandler had children:

  1. Tobias Chandler: born say 1551, buried Bishop's Stortford 24 Oct 1629."He married at Bishop's Stortford on 21 Sept 1574, Joan Momford, who was buried there 29 June 1618. Tobias and Joan were the parents of ten children, including the New England immigrant Margaret Chandler, who married first Henry Monck and second William Dennison (1572 - 1654)". [1]
  2. Barbara Chandler, born say 1553, "She was a legatee in the 1555 will of her grandfather Thomas Chaundeler, and in 1556 she was a legatee in the will of her other grandfather, John Page the elder. Her subsequent history is not known. [1]
  3. Raphael Chandler, born say 1555, he was a legatee in the will of his grandfather, John Page the elder. His subsequent history is not known. [1]
  4. Agnes Chandler (possibly), born say 1557-58, buried Bishop's Stortford 20 Feb. 1599/1600 [1]
  5. Henry Chandler, born say 1560, died Bishop's Stortford, 17 Dec 1618. He married about 1590 Anne/Agnes ____. She married second at Bishop's Stortford 8 July 1622 (as his second wife) John Miller, the son of William Miller of same. He was born about 1560 and buried at Bishop's Stortford 11 Oct 1633, "John Miller, Senior". John Miller married (1) there 21 Nov 1585, Mary Pilston/Pylston, doubtless the daughter of William and Agnes (Elliot) Pilston of Bishop's Stortford; Spencer Miller suggests that Thomas Miller, son of John and Mary (Pilston) Miller, was the immigrant, Thomas Miller of Middletown, Connecticut. Agnes, wife of John Miller "the elder" was buried Bishop's Stortford 6 Dec 1630. Henry and Agnes Chandler were the parents of six children, including the New England immigrant, William Chandler (1595 - 1642) of Roxbury, Massachusetts. [1]
  6. Sarah Chandler (possibly), baptized Bishop's Stortford 5 July 1562, married there 20 Sept 1580 to John Ingham. [1]
  7. Richard Chandler, (possibly), born say 1565, buried Bishop's Stortford, 2 Feb 1592/3 [1]
  8. Edward Chandler, born say 1568, buried Bishop's Stortford, county Hertford, as "Old Edward Chandler", 9th Nov 1653, married Ann ____. [1]
  9. William Chandler (possibly), baptized Bishop's Stortford, 31 Aug 1570, buried there 8 July 1590 [1]
  10. John Chandler (possibly), baptized Bishop's Stortford, 10 Aug 1573, buried there 9 May 1592 [1]
  11. Thomas Chandler (possibly), died 23 May 1592 [1]

Joan was buried 11 Mar 1606/7, at Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England. [2] [1]

Thomas was the second among four children.

He died at the age of 83.

See http://www.milkcanpapers.com/chandler0-4.html for more information.

The earliest mention found of Thomas is in the subsidy of Edward VI [1549/50-1550/1] when as Thomas Chaundler jun. he was assessed at Stortford 10s. on goods. He is taxes at Stortford in subsequest subsidies. In 1556 Henry Hoye was quenrent v. Thomas Chaundeler and his wif Hoane (Joane), deforciants, for a messuage and lands in Stortford. Thomas Chandler also appears for many years in the

churchwardens' accounts. In 1558 he paid an assessment of 12d., in 1562 he paid 5s. for wood in Thorleywyk; in 1573 he was collector for the market house and in 1582 he paid 12s. rent. The churchwarden's rental amounts show that in 1592 Philologus Bush and Robert Smith held a double tenement in South Street, formerly Bowyers, where they resided, iach paying 6d. per year. In the next year (1593) the said double tenement was held by Philologus Bush and Thomas Chandler, the latter evidently having secured Smith's moiety. Philologus Bush and Thomas Chandler continue to reside there , and appear there yearly until 1600, when Thomas Chandler is succeeded by Henry Chandler. Then Philologus Bush and Henry Chandler appear there yearly until 1619, when the latter is succeeded by his widow. Thomas Chandler was church warden at Bishops Stortford in 1562, 1563 and 1574. He left no will and, as the parish registers do not give the names of the parents of infants baptised prior to 1580, the names of all his children cannot be given with certainty.

Married Joanne Farr b. 1529 in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, d. March 11, 1606 in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, in 1552 in Bishop's Stortford, Herfordshire, England. She was the daughter of John Farr 1428–1461 and Agnes Farr.

Origins

Son of Thomas, father of John, Thomas, Agnes (Mrs Richard Bedwell) and Robert. He was the only son or only son to outlive his father. He left considerable property in Bishop's Stortford, and married an Agnes circa 1525.

English Origins of New England Families, Vol II, p. 355: "Thomas Chandler of Bishops-Stortford, born about 1500, died in the spring of 1554. He married, about 1525, Agnes ____, who survived him. Since he is the only person of the family name in his generation who appears in Bishop-Stortford, it may be assumed he was the only surviving son of his father. He seems to have been successful and prosperous, as there are evidences that he acquired considerable property and left a good estate. The earliest mention of him is in 1532, in one of four land transactions by fine in which he participated, in three as (pages 356 through 359 are missing! Bought the book, so continuing) a purchaser and in one as a vendor. As Thomas Chandler Jr he was assessed at Stortford 10d on land in the subsidy of 33 Henry VIII (2541-1542) [and so on.] In 1546, 1548 and 1553 Thomas Chandler was one of the church wardens of Bishop-Stortford. Abstracts from his will follows: The Will of Thomas Chandler of Stortford dated 30 Mar 1554. To my son John Chandler and his heirs and assigns for ever the messuage I now dwell in, together with one garden in Basborm Lane to the said Messuage and one croft enclosed at Waldinge, of four acres, with one meadow by the waterside and one croft in Thorley that I late bought of Richard Pilleston, the said John paying yearly to Agneis, my wife, the rent of said premises during her life. It continues to name sons Thomas and Robert, Anne - daughter of son John, Barbara - daughter of son Thomas, son-in-law Richard Bedwell (married his daughter, Agnes)
