Evidence from the National Records of Scotland

11 June 1584: Tack by James, Commendator of the Abbey of Inchaffray with consent of the convent and of Thomas Chisholm, lawful son to James Chisholm of Cromlix, in favour of John, Earl of Montrose, Treasurer in name and on behalf of John, Master of Montrose, his son and apparent heir and nephew to the said Commendator of the teind sheaves of the lands and barony of Fosswall, Coul, Coulshill and Clune for 20 merks yearly; and of the vicarage teinds of Coul, Coulshill, Mains of Kincardine, Duchallys and Drumfad for 39 merks yearly; and of the vicarage teinds of Berdralls and Damahollies for 10 merks yearly payable at Candlemas and Beltane yearly by equal portions; for his lifetime and the lifetimes of two heirs succeeding to him the said Master and for 19 years thereafter; the entry to be at the date of the tack which contains an obligation upon the said James' successors, abbots of Inchaffray to renew the tack when it expires in favour of the heirs and successors of the said John, Earl of Montrose, so they may be perpetual tacksmen for the payment of 40 merks upon the renewal of every tack.
