In 1998 the following article was published on the English origins of the Clarke family:

Christopher Gleason Clark, THE ENGLISH ANCESTRY OF JOSEPH CLARK (1613-1683) OF DEDHAM AND MEDFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS in NEHGR vol 152 p 3-23

This is *THE* State of current research.

Earlier works are discussed and completely refuted. The baptism records for the Clarkes of Dedham were located and published in NEHGR. They were the children of Thomas Clarke of Wesgate and Mary Canne. Please see the article above. The Clarke family pedigree is outlined for the first time.[1]

disputed: Priscilla Clarke almost surely born 1621 Banham, Suffolk, England DEATH 12 AUG 1692 • Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts

The initial article identified the parents of Priscilla Clark as likely the daughter of Thomas Clarke of Westgate and Mary Canne. [1] However, the followup article showed this to be incorrect. All the children of Thomas Clarke and Mary Canne were explicitly named in the will of Faith Catton of Banham, and Priscilla was not among them. Though likely closely related, this Will eliminates the possibility that Priscilla was the daughter of Thomas Clarke. [2]

The baptism records for the Clarkes of Dedham were located and published in NEHGR. They were the children of Thomas Clarke of Banham and Mary Canne. Please see the article above. The Clarke family pedigree is outlined for the first time.[1]

Biography

Thomas Clarke was bp March 7, 1567 in Banham, Norfolk, England as a son of Rowland Clarke[3] and Margaret Micklewood.[1]

It is believed that the derivation of the name Clarke came from the work “Clerk” or “Clericus” in Latin and was first used to describe a person’s occupation or employment probably as a scribe in the church. The first use of the word Clericus in England next to a person’s given name is found in the Doomsday book, the Norman census book that was written following the Norman invasion. [4]

Baptism

Thomas Clarke was baptised on 7 Mar 1567/8 in St. Mary the Virgin Church, Banham, Norfolk, England by father Rowland Clarke.[5]

Wife and Children

Mary Canne was born in England about 1575. Her parents were Thomas and Rebecca Canne. She married Thomas Clarke in Banham, Norfolk, England about 1602. Mary and Thomas had six children baptized in Banham. Thomas Clarke died in Banham, Norfolk, England, in 1638. Mary may have come to New England with one or more of their children. She may be the Mary Clarke widow, who was admitted to the church in Dedham on April 1, 1642 and died on May 21, 1642. She was buried in Dedham on May 22, 1642. [6][7]

Children of Thomas Clarke of Westgate and Mary Canne include (All children baptized at Banham, Norfolk, England:

Thomas Clark bp 1 April 1604 d 1 July 1656 in Banham, Norfolk, England. m Elizabeth __________ by 1637.

disputed:

Priscilla Clarke almost surely born 1621 Banham, Suffolk, England Death 12 AUgust 1692 • Dedham, Suffolk, Massachusetts[8][9] [1][10]

Death

Thomas died May 10, 1638 in Banham, Norfolk, England. The burial entry in 1638 reads: Thomas Clarke ye Elder, carpenter was buried. Date and month unclear. [11][12][13] His will dated 11 July 1637, and proved at New Buckenham 20 June 1638.[1]

Will

A transcription of the will for Thomas Clarke is published in "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register", Vol 152, January 1998, pg. 15, in an article by Christopher Gleason Clark, entitled "The English Ancestry of Joseph Clark (1613-1683) of Dedham and Medfield, Massachusetts". The will cites his grandaughter Marye Wheelock. This, along with other evidence presented in the article, strongly suggests the relationships among the Clarks, Wheelocks, and Barbers presented in this genealogy.[14]
