Like his father, was married twice, and had in all 18 children, the youngest born when the father was 71. This youngest son of the second earl was 49 years younger than his eldest half-sister, who was already a grandmother when he was born.
This is the most remarkable case on record of children born when the father had reached advanced age found in the British peerage. It is that of two earls of Leicester, father and son, the former of whom petitioned King George III to deal more leniently with the American Colonies, while the latter died in 1909, one hundred and fifty-five years after his fathers birth.
