Sourced information about this Thomas Cushman is summarized in several publications. The earliest is: "A Grandson of Elder Thomas Cushman and Some of His Descendants", NEHGR Vol 72, 1918, p14. (Contact manager for others.)
A compilation of the information from these publications includes:
Thomas Cushman (Thomas, Thomas, Elder Thomas, Robert) was born probably born at Lebanon, Connecticut about 1705, and died after 1768, last known residence New Providence, New Jersey. He married about 1728/29, Mary ___, and secondly at New Providence, New Jersey, 17th June, 1764, Susannah Johnson, married by Rev. Jonathon Elmer of the New Providence Presbyterian Church. He had removed from Lebanon to Elizabeth, New Jersey prior 1752 when his youngest child was born there.
The first seven children by his first wife were born at Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut (Barbour, p. 49), and baptized at Lebanon First Church (Records at Connecticut State Library). The last child, Isaac, was born at New Providence.
(There may also have been a child, Solomon Cushman, whose birth was not listed in town records, but presumed by one researcher because he was baptized with Rhoda, 24 March 1734 at Lebanon.)
Thomas Cushman was a constable at Elizabethtown "46/52" (Genealogical Mag of New Jersey 28:48 & 96)
Thomas Cushman was the administrator of his son Oliver's estate. The administrator's bond was 19 June 1759, and inventory of the estate of Oliver Cushman "of the borough of Elizabeth and Co. of Essex and Province of Eastern New Jersey Carpenter," was dated 15 Aug. 1759, (Essex Wills of New Jersey, vol 1757-1759, p 2623-2626)
Elizabeth Town and New Providence are about 16 miles apart. It is therefore likely that Thomas moved to New Providence before his 1764 marriage there.
Thomas Cushman was included in a list of members of the Presbyterian Church at New Providence as of 5 Jan 1768. (Records of Paster Jonathan Elmer, 1763 - 1793, The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, vol 19, p. 94.)
The Rev. Jonathon Elmer kept detailed records of deaths, and Thomas Cushman is not included in his list, indicating he may have moved away. I have included him as buried in the churchyard at new Providence because that is the last known town where he lived, and he was a member of this church. There is no other known evidence that he is buried here.
No will or probate for Thomas Cushman has been found in Essex [now Union] County, New Jersey.
