Descent from Captain James Davis
Thomas Davis was born on 28 January 1668/69 in Manokin, Somerset County, Maryland.2,3 He was the son of James Davis and Margaret Jordan. Thomas Davis married Mary Pierpont, daughter of Henry Pierpont and Ann Summerland, circa 1696.4 Thomas Davis died on 11 April 1749 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, at age 80 years, 2 months and 14 days.5
James Davis moved his family back and forth from Virginia to Maryland which can be seen since he proved rights for transporting his two sons, both named Thomas (first Thomas b. 1666, d. 1669; second Thomas b. 1669), from Virginia to Maryland on August 10, 1671, and on 23 September 1675 he proved rights for transporting his daughter Rachell from Virginia to Maryland.6
Thomas signed the Quaker Register on 29 March 1688 as "cousin" [probably nephew] on the occasion of James Jordan's marriage to Elizabeth Ratliff of Isle of Wight County.7
One of the earliest records found of Thomas Davis in Anne Arundel County is in 1696 when he was witness to a will. On October 20, 1701, at "Davistone," a 240-acre survey was made for Thomas Davis in Annel Arundel County."8
On 9 March 1721/2 Thomas signed as "of the Parrish of Checketauck in the county of Nancemond in Virgnia" conveyance to Ephraim Wilson 25 acres called "King's Purchase," part of 450 acres of "Davis's Choice" on the south side of Back Creek, which had been granted 24 Feb. 1665/6 to Thomas Davis, "now lately deceased, the grantor having become possessed as heir of said Thomas." As the footnote seems to explain it:
The deed (Somerset Co., Md., Deed Bk.) did not state the relationship between the Thomas Davis mentioned, then deceased, and the grantor. The Thomas Davis, deceased, was apparently the brother of James Davis, James being the father of this Thomas Davis, the grantor, who had inherited the land as the eldest son of Thomas's eldest brother. It has been claimed that he is the Thomas Davis of Anne Arundel Co., Md., who deposed Feb. 1726/7, he was aged 58 and 9 July 1740, he was aged 71 (Anne Arundel Co., Md., Land Commission Bk.), these ages being in agreement with a 1668/9 birth, married Mary Pierpont and died 11 April 1749.
This Thomas Davis, however, had children baptized in the Church of England as early as 1697 (All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel Co., Md., Register, 1669-1721) and made oath (rather than affirmation) to the two depositions stating his age. There is no evidence he ever was a Quaker."
On the other hand, it appears there is a question about what or which Thomas Davis we have here a Purse & Person states: "Since his father's Maryland associations appear to have ended in 1678, when he [Thomas] was still a child, and since Thomas Davis is not an unusual name, further evidence is needed to establish a connection betwen Nansemond Co., Va., and Anne Arundel Co., Md.9
Thomas Davis, born 08 Jul 1666 in Manoakin, Somerset County, MD;
died Bef. 01 Jan 1667/68.
Thomas died as a child at either 5 months. or 17 months
