About Thomas Efford

Thomas was a shoemaker/cordwinder by trade, a job which he appears to have worked at most of his life. He met and married his first wife Jane Hamlin whilst living in Devon. Shortly after the birth of their first child, in 1837, a daughter named Mary, the family moved to Bristol Gloucestershire.

According to the census of 1841 they lived in the Parish of St. Augustine the Less, with daughter Mary and their second child Ann, who was born in Bristol in 1838.

By the year 1847 the family had settled at 6 Blackfriars, in the Parish of St. James Bristol, where on the 19 August 1847 their son Walter Efford was born.

After the death of his first wife Jane, Thomas moved to Bedwelty Monmouthshire, Wales. Here he married for a second time to Hannah (maiden name not known). Hannah was born in Brecknock,Cumda, Breconshire Wales.

By 1861 there is no mention on the census of the two daughters from his former marriage to Jane. It is possible that both girls were married or living away from home. Walter who is aged 13 is still living at home. There is no mention of any children of this marriage.

The family moved once again and in 1881 they were living at 61 High Street, Rhynmey Monmouthshire. Thomas was working as a cord winder. Thomas died of Hemiplagia at the age of 74, on the 13 September 1883. Yet again the age on the death certificate does not correspond to the year of birth. At the time of his death he was living at 59 High St, Rhynmey. William Hoskins, his brother-in-law was the person who informed the Registrar, and on the certificate it states that William was present at the time of death.

After Thomas died, Hannah went to live with her brother-in-law, who also lived in the High Street. Hannah died in March 1893 in Rhynmey, Bedwelty, Wales.
