Notes: the great. The Complete Peerage vol.IV,pp.247-248 corrected by vol.XIV,p.255. Lord Deputy of Ireland for the Duke of Clarence, brother of Edward IV, from 1462 to 1467. His father, James sixth Earl of Desmond was godfather to the Duke of Clarence.

   EARLDOM OF DESMOND

   VII. 7. THOMAS FITZJAMES (FITZGERALD), EARL OF DESMOND [IRL], son and heir Steward of Connaught and Constable of Limerick Castle, 2 August 1462; in which year he raised the siege of Waterford, which had been invested by the Lancastrian forces under Sir John Butler. LORD DEPUTY OF IRELAND to George, Duke of Clarence, 1463-67; founder of the Collegre of Youghal,[e] 27 December 1464. He married [dispensation to marry though within the prohibited degrees, 22 August 1455] his cousin, Ellice, daughter of William (BARRY), 8th LORD BARRY or BARRYMORE [IRL], by Ellen, daughter of LORD Roche [IRL]. He was found guilty of extorting "coyne and livery" by a Parliament held at Drogheda, where he was beheaded[b] 15 February 1467/8, and buried in St. Peter's Church, but subsequently removed to Christ Church, Dublin. His widow married, as 2nd wife, Maurice Mor FitzGiBBON, the White Knight, who was living 1496.

   (b) John (Tiptoft), Earl of Worcester, the Chief Governor, through whom this act was carried out, was himself executed 18 Oct. 1470, for this and other acts of injustice. The story runs that Elizabeth Widville, the Queen Consort, who was a bitter enemy to Desmond, had procured (privately) a privy seal warrant for his arrest and execution. According to the Four Masters, this Earl was "the most illustrious of his tribe in Ireland in his time, for his comeliness and stature, for his hospitality and chivalry, his charity and humanity to the poor."
