About Thomas Acton Fitzgerald
Thomas A. Fitzgerald was a maternal uncle of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. He was born to Mr. and Mrs. John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald in the colonial Governor Hutchinson's house in the North End.
A favorite anecdote of Thomas Fitzerald was his teaching Joe Kennedy Jr. and John F. Kennedy how to swim. The story fits his close relationship with the boys as a favorite uncle.
He played football and baseball for Dorchester High, a star quarterback and captain of the swim team at Andover Academy.
Thomas was a veteran of World War I, serving honorably as a lieutenant in the ammunition train of the 301st Infantry. He was a street commissioner of Boston and official for Veteran's Affairs.
His Dorchester home at 3 Rundel Park in Ashmont was just a few blocks from the Honey Fitz mansion on Welles Ave. which was lost to fire. Tom's mother and father changed their official residence and lived with Thomas' family after about 1936 and his home became the site of many happy Fitzgerald and Kennedy reunions
(see attached Boston Globe source).
