  1. Judith Gleason Claassen. The Origin of Thomas Gleason of Watertown and Cambridge, Massachusetts. New England Historic and Genealogical Register (NEHGR, January 2014). 168:5 - 15 link

THOMAS Gleason was bp 3 SEP 1609 in Cockfield, Suffolk, England Watertown son of Thomas Gleasona and Anne Armesby. His parents married in Cockfield 22 March 1602. His father was buried in Cockfield 22 March 1609/10. His father left a nuncupative will in Cockfield 19 Mar 1609/10 in which he calls himself "Thomas Gleeson of Cockefeild in the countie of Suff husbandman" and names his wife Anne and "children." Anne Armesby was bp. 6 Nov. 1572. She married second to Humphrey Sowgate after 1 Oct 1610 and had two more children Bridget and Martha. Her parents were John Amesby and Fraces Frost. Thomas Gleason had two siblings Susan and Elizabeth. He married Susanna Page on Susanna Page in Cockfield, Suffolk, England and four children are recorded there from 1635-1643 (Susan, Thomas, Joseph and Frances) and Frances was buried there 1644. There are no records of him from 1644-1652. This gives us a narrow window of arrival. On June 1, 1652 -- Thomas Gleason took the Oath of Allegiance at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Thomas Gleson {sic} and Susanna Page had four children who were baptized at Cockfield, Suffolk, England:

  1. Susan Gleson, baptized on October 13, 1635.
  2. Thomas Gleson, baptized on January 21, 1637/1638 (i.e., 1638).
  3. Joseph Gleson, baptized on November 19, 1640.
  4. Frances (daughter) Gleson, baptized on May 4, 1643; she was buried at All Saints Church, Hartest, Suffolk, England

Susanna Page is mentioned in the will of William Page of Watertown Dec 16 1665 as kinsman Very little is found of Thomas Leason or Gleason on the records of Watertown although he seems to have lived there till 1654 he then lived in Cambridge until 1658 when he settled in Charlestown and on Dec 3 he leased from Capt Scarlett a portion of the Squa Sachem lands 1639 Squa Sachem had deeded to the town of Charlestown her lands lying in what is now Medford reserving to herself certain tracts on the west side of Mysticke Pond By her will she bequeathed all her property to certain prominent citizens among whom were Gov John Wiinthrop and Edward Gibson The latter secured possession of the lands on the west side of Mysticke Pond and this was the land subsequently leased to Thomas Gleason Soon after this l ease was made a question arose as to the rightful ownership of these lands and in March 1662 the town of Charlestown instituted a suit against Thomas Gleason for the purpose of obtaining possession All of Thomas Gleason's resources were swallowed up in the litigation and the case was unsettled when he died in the Spring of 1686 (How do we know he died in 1686?) His widow Susanna died in Boston Jan 24 1691.

  2. Suffolk Co., Mass., Probate Records 11:39 On 9 Sept. 1685 Ann Winne of Watertown made her will. She was widow of Edward Winn but also widow of William Page. Near the beginning of the long list of heirs she named brother in law Gleason, kinsman Thomas Gleason, the wife of Thomas Prat Sr., and kin: Joseph, John, Philip, Isaac, Willilam, Marie, and Anne Gleason.
  3. Robert H. Rodgers, Middlesex County, Records of Probate and Administration, March 1660/61 - December 1670 (Boston: NEHGS, 2001) 258-61 Willilam Page of Watertown made his will 16 Dec. 1664 directing his wife Hannah [a frequent alternate to Anna] to give "to Thomas Leason my kinsman the summe of twentie shilllings: and that shee given to William Leason now living with me the summe of ten pounds to be payd at age of twenty two years, provided he stay with her . . . ." While William does not call Thomas his brother-in-law, William's widow Anna did call Thomas that in her will.

His name appears first among those taking the oath of allegiance in Watertown, Mass., on June 1, 1652. However, he was in Watertown before 1642 when a child was born there. He was living in Cambridge in 1657 and in 1658 he removed to Charlestown."

"On Dec. 3, 1658 he leased from a Capt. Scarlett, a portion of the Squa Sachem lands. One writer calls Squa Sachem the 'Queen of the Massachusetts Indians.' In 1639 Squa Sachem had deeded to the town of Charlestown, her land lying in what is now Medford, reserving to herself certain tracts on the west side of Mystic Pond. In her will she bequeathed all her property to certain prominent citizens, among whom were Gov. John Winthrop and Edward Gibbons. The latter secured possession of the lands on the west side of Mystic Pond, and this was the land subsequently leased to Thomas Gleason. Soon after the lease was made a question arose as to the rightful ownership of the land and in March, 1662, the town of Charlestown instituted a suit against Thomas Gleason for the purpose of obtaining possession. All of Thomas' resources were swallowed up in the litigation and the case was still unsettled when he died in the spring of 1686."

"Little is really known about Thomas, but it seems that he was of a somewhat arbitrary disposition which not infrequently got him into trouble with the town authorities over minor matters of conduct." Thomas and Susanna were the parents of nine children: Thomas 1637-1705, Joseph 1642-?, John 1647-?, Philip 1649-?, Nathaniel 1651-?, Isaac 1654-?, William 1655-?, Mary 1657-?, and Ann 1659-?.

He married, in England, Susanna Page, who died in Boston, Mass, Jan 24, 1691. In 1658 he removed to Charlestown, and December 3 of tha t year, leased from Captain Scarlett a portion of the Squa Sachem lands, which lay on the west side of Mystic pond in Medford. Soon afterwards a question arose as to the rightful owners hip of these lands, and in March, 1662, the town of Charlestown brought a suit against Thomas Gleason to obtain possession. The case was unsettled when the latter died in 1686.

For over a hundred years, many descendants of the colonial immigrant Thomas Gleason (~1607-1686) of Watertown and Cambridge have believed he was from Sulgrave, Northamptonshire, England and associated with a prominent land-owning family there, based on a unsupported suggestion in a 1909 genealogy by John Barber White. [1]

Research published in January 2014 confirms his true origins were from Cockfield, Suffolk, England. [2] Claassen's key findings include:

No record exists that Thomas Gleason was a freeman or property owner at Massachusetts Bay Colony. His initial presence at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony suggests strong ties to East Anglia -- particularly Essex and Suffolk -- the origins of most of the initial Watertown settlers Thomas Gleason's wife's Page family has been confirmed to be from Hawstead, Suffolk, England. The 1637/1638 Hawstead, Suffolk, England will of Thomas Page called his daughter Susanna "now the wife of Thomas Gleeson" indicating that Thomas Gleason had married Susanna Page by 1638. A 1638 muster roll included one Thomas Gleson of Cockfield, Suffolk, England which was less than five miles southeast of Hawstead. Cockfield was a center of Puritan activity. "Thomas son of Thomas Gleson" was baptized on September 3, 1609 at Cockfield, Suffolk, England; the father was buried on March 22, 1609/1610 (i.e., 1610). Thomas Gleson and Susan Page were married in Cockfield, Suffolk, England on "July the last [day] 1634;" baptisms of four of their children were recorded between 1635 and 1643, matching in large part to the list of known children in New England. This suggests they emigrated between 1644 and 1652. The 1652 was the first record of Thomas Gleason at Massachusetts Bay Colony. Thomas Gleason's father left a will, naming a wife Ann; a marriage record exists at Cockfield, Suffolk, England between Thomas Gleson {sic} and Anne Armsbye {sic} dated October 28, 1602. Anne was baptized on November 6, 1572 . She was a daughter of John Amersbie {sic} who was buried on September 4, 1623. John Amersbie's wife Frances was buried on March 19, 1615/1616 (i.e., 1616). The 1623 will of Thomas's stepfather, Humphrey Sowgate, mentioned "son-in-law" (used then to also mean stepson) Thomas Gleson. Biography

September 3, 1609 -- Thomas Gleson {sic} was baptized at Cockfield, Suffolk, England. Thomas Gleson {sic} was a son of Thomas Gleason and Anne Armsbye {sic}. [3]

July 31, 1634 -- Thomas Gleson {sic} and Susanna Page of Hawsted, Suffolk, England married at Cockfield, Suffolk, England. [4]

Thomas Gleson {sic} and Susanna Page had four children who were baptized at Cockfield, Suffolk, England: [5]

Susan Gleson, baptized on October 13, 1635. Thomas Gleson, baptized on January 21, 1637/1638 (i.e., 1638). Joseph Gleson, baptized on November 19, 1640. Frances (daughter) Gleson, baptized on May 4, 1643; she was buried at All Saints Church, Hartest, Suffolk, England. 1637 - 1659 -- Thomas and Susanna Page Gleson had nine children: two daughters (Mary and Ann) and seven sons (Thomas, Joseph, John, Philip, Nathaniel, Isaac, and William). [6]

Between 1644 and 1652, Thomas and his family emigrated from England to Massachusetts Bay Colony. They initially settled at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, then settled at Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [7]

June 1, 1652 -- Thomas Gleason took the Oath of Allegiance at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [8]

1658 -- Thomas Gleason and family moved from Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony to Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [9]

December 3, 1658 -- Thomas Gleason leased from Captain Scarlett a portion of the Squa {sic} Sachem lands [10] on the west side of Mysticke {sic} pond. [11]

March 1662 -- the town of Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony sued Thomas Gleason for possession of the lands he leased from Captain Scarlett. The lawsuit swallowed up all of Thomas Gleason's resources and was unsettled when he died in the Spring of 1686. [12]

Death

Thomas Gleason died in either 1686 or January 24, 1690 at Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony though no documentation has been found yet.

16 additional information found @ https://gleasonfamily.com/ Early 17th century in England was a time of political and religious upheaval, leading to the Civil War of 1642-1651 between the Royalists and the Parlimentarians and resulting in the overthrow of the monarchy. Perhaps not coincidentally this is the period when no English records of Thomas Gleason or his family can be found. The last Suffolk known record of Thomas and Susanna is in 1644 with the burial of their fourth child, Frances, in Hartest, Suffolk at one year of age. They are not heard from again until Thomas took the Oath of Fidelity in 1652 in Watertown, Massachusetts.

There is no doubt that both the family of Thomas, and the Page family of Susanna, were of the Puritan persuasion (Congregationalists). In fact, tiny Cockfield might be called a “hotbed” of Puritan activity at the time. Thomas’s mother Anne (Armesby) (Gleason) Sowgate, after widowed for the second time, is recorded as having made a monetary gift to the Puritan military cause of Suffolk during the war. One might well wonder if Thomas may have served as a soldier in Cromwell’s “New Model Army” on the Parlimentarian side during the years of conflict. Perhaps Thomas and Susanna had planned to join the Puritan community in Massachusetts earlier, as did Susanna’s brother William, but the journey was unavoidably postponed due to war.

Thomas was raised as the lone male child in the family. He had two older Gleason sisters and two younger half sisters who were born after his widowed mother married Humphrey Sowgate, a prosperous farmer and landowner. No doubt Thomas grew up working on his stepfather's farm. There is no evidence that Thomas or his father were ever landowners; but the family of his mother, the Armesby family, can be traced back for several generations in Suffolk as owning land. Additionally, the family of Susanna Page was of the landowner class. Her father Thomas Page owned properties in both Hawstead and Finningham.
