About Thomas James Goolsby, III

Surname has also been reported to be Goldsby.

Date of birth might be 1708. Date and place of birth have also been (erroneously?) reported to be 1708 at Chickahominy, Hanover County, Virginia.

Thomas Goolsby was born about 1708 in James City County, Virginia, and died about 1774 in Albermarle County, Virginia. His will is recorded in Albemarle Co, VA.

Parents: Thomas Goulsby and Tabitha Turrentine.

Goolsby was one of the earliest settlers of Albemarle Co., VA. He located there in 1732, thirteen years before the county was organized. He took out a Crown Grant for 1,200 acres on the James River, (this location would suggest that it was in that part of Fluvanna or Goochland Co. that became Albemarle later). In 1745 he sold 500 acres to S. Shelton on the tributaries of the James River, called Holman's & Goolsby Creeks. The first deed of record was destroyed by the depredations of the British Army.

Thomas married twice; the name of his first wife is not recorded but may have been Martha Thomas. His second wife was Lucy Bryant. Wood's does not mention her parents. The issue by the Bryant marriage were: William; Thomas; Susan, Mrs. Childress; Ann, Mrs. Nowlin; Lucy, Mrs. Saunders; Elizabeth.
