About Thomas Gould, I

Biography

Notables Project
Thomas Gould is Notable.
Thomas Gould was born, probably in England, about 1607 (testified 1652, age 45).[4][5]

Goold, Thomas (1607-27 Oct. 1675), founder of the first Baptist church in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was born in southern England, possibly in Hampshire or Wiltshire. A wagonmaker by trade, Goold immigrated to Massachusetts in 1639 with his wife, Hannah Miller, with whom he had three daughters. Goold and his wife became full members of the Congregational Church in Charlestown on 7 June 1640, and he became a freeman of the colony on 2 June 1641. By the time his wife Hannah died in 1647, Goold had leased the governor John Winthrop's Ten Hills Farm on the northern border of Charlestown, where he raised cattle. He married Mary Harwood, a widow from an established family, by 1654; together they had two children.

Thomas Gould migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The
Disputed Origin and Associations

Thomas Gould was reported the son of John Gould and Judith Marks (aka Judith Langley, Judith De Langley). This association was disputed and the association severed based on the supposed parents wills, 1633 and 1650--these wills mention no son Thomas. See Research Notes and G2G, "Proposal to sever Thomas Gould from parents."

His birth location was reported as "Herefordshire, England." This was added after he was attached to parents John and Judith, who were of Herefordshire. There is presumably no other contemporaneous source that, independent of these parents, suggests his birth there. At the time the parents were severed, his birth location was updated to "England."

An attached son Jacob Gould who was born Cambridge was not reported in the family of Thomas Gould of Charlestown.[1][2] He was otherwise reported the son of Thomas Gould, of Cambridge and Boston, and wife Mary.[3] These parent-child associations were updated in 2021. See Research Notes

Thomas Gould was born, probably in England, about 1607 (testified 1652, age 45).[4][5]

Immigration

In a partial reconstruction of 1639 passenger lists, Thomas Gould of Charlestown was identified by Robert Charles Anderson in 2008 as having immigrated aboard the Jonathan.[6]

At Massachusetts Bay

Thomas Gould and his wife Hannah (possibly nee Miller) were admitted to the First Church of Charlestown on 7 day 4 mo 1640 [7 June 1640].[7] Their daughter Hannah was baptized there the following year, 11 (2) 1641 [11 April 1641].[8][9]

Thomas Gould was made a freeman, 2 June 1641.[10]

Thomas Gould died Boston, before 30 April 1674 (date will codicil proved).[11] See Research Notes

Will

Thomas Gould left an undated will, with a codicil dated 25 April 1674, proved 30 April 1674.[12] Wyman published an abstract of the will.[13]

Family

Thomas[14] married (1) Hannah, possibly Hannah Miller, who died 15 (3) 1647 [15 May 1647]; Wyman writes, "at Ten-hills farm (per Winthrop papers)."[15][16] Thomas married (2) before 1654, Mary _____,[17] possibly Mary Harris, the widow Hayward or Howard;[18]

Children born to Thomas and Hannah Gould,[19]

Hannah Gould, baptized Charlestown First Church, 11 (2) 1641 [11 April 1641]; married 1675 Thomas Elyot [Eliot].[20][21][22]
Mary Gould; married 1669, Thomas Skinner.[23][24]
Mehitable Gould; married James Gooding.[25]

Children of Thomas and Mary Gould,[26]

Elizabeth Gould, born about 1654 (age 17 in 1671).[27]
Samuel Gould.[28]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents, John and Judith Gould. Both Walter Goodwin Davis (1959) and Donald Lines Jacobus (1960) wrote about the family of John and Judith _____ Gould; both authors included abstracts of their wills. No son Thomas is mentioned in either will, and neither author otherwise associated a son Thomas with the family.

John Gould, of the parish of "Kinglangley" died in 1633, leaving a will that called out his wife, Judith, and children, John (eldest), Joseph, Sarah, Hannah, Mary, Sacheus [Zaccheus], Nathan, Abell, Lidia and Elizabeth.[29][30]

Widow Judith, "of King's Langley" married again, to John's second cousin, Simon Gold of Bovingdon.[31]

She died in 1650, leaving a will mentioning her children Abel, Lydia, Elizabeth, Hannah, and those at New England--Nathan and Sarah. She mention son Zacheus, deceased.[32][33]

Thomas Gould of Cambridge is different man. See Benjamin Apthorp Gould, The family of Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield (1895) for chapter about "Thomas Gould of Boston"; they have son Jacob Gould, born Cambridge 1643.[34] The author claimed Thomas of Cambridge arrived 1639 aboard Jonathan with wife Mary, but is disputed by by Anderson who identifies that passenger as Thomas of Charlestown.[35] See also Gould-[____] by 1639 marriage, New England Marriages prior to 1700; the only noted work consulted is "Gould, 346," which is the above noted 1895 work.[36]

See also, Jacob Gould 1643 birth record, "Massachusetts, Births and Christenings, 1639-1915"; database, FamilySearch; reports parents Thomas Gould and Mary; cites Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts; FHL microfilm 496,864.

Date of Death. Records of the First Baptist Church report his death 27 October 1675,[37] and the same date (or "Oct. 1675") appears in several entries within the Massachusetts vital records collection at Ancestry.com.[38][39] Wyman, however, reports about his undated will and 25 April 1674 codicil, proved 30 April 1674.[40] The recorded will and codicil are Suffolk Probate case 682; the dates on the codicil are clear,[41] thus Thomas Gould's date of death has been revised to "before 30 April 1674."

Elizabeth had an uncle, John Harris. About Thomas' daughter Elizabeth Gould, Thomas Bellows Wyman wrote that she "testified 1671, ae 17 yrs.; her uncle, John Harris, named in deposition."[42]

Stepson Nathaniel Hayward/Howard. Will of Thomas Gould mentions "sonn Nathaniell Hayward" (Wyman reported "Haywood" but the surname appears Hayward in the will on record.)[43][44] Nathaniel seems otherwise Nathaniel (Howard) Hayward (abt.1642-1710). Wyman profiled him as "Nathaniel Howard"; reports he was associated with the Baptists in 1669 and that he "bought of J. Gooding ..."[45]
