Thomas Harris

Thomas Harris, born April 25, 1618 in Hatherup, Gloucester, England; died August 02, 1687 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts; married Martha Lake November 15, 1647 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts.

His sister Bridget Bradstreet (Harris) lived quite nearby on lands that straddled Rowley and Ipswich.

Notes for Thomas Harris

He was one of the early settlers of Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, being in that town as early as 1636, three years after its first settlement. If he was of age in 1636, he was born not later than 1615, in England. In 1644 he seems to have been living in Rowley, an adjoining town, of which he was one of the first settlers. In the first laying out of land in Rowley, "the tenth of the eleventh Anno D(omi)ni 1643," that is January 10, 1644, he had land laid out to him as follows--"To Thomas Harris one house lot containing two acres, bounded on the South side by John Harris his house lot, the East end by the streets"; a planting lot in the "Northeast Field" described as "eight acres of upland, lying upon the above said places;" "one acre and a quarter" in "Satchell Meadow;" "two acres of Salt Marsh" at "Warehouse River"; two acres at "Newbury Highway"; and two acres near "Long Island."

Maybe " # 5 " [my own notation to keep the lineage in mind] was born in England at St. Albans, but was in Ipswich, Ma. and Rowley with 3 brothers in 1644. He was one of 20 paid by the town as a militiaman against the Indians. Also a proprieter in Rowley, having land, doing fishing seems clear. Will was probated 9-14-1687.
