=DNA Findings='

Thomas Harvey b. 1617 has been proven to be of the =R-M269= haplogroup. However, his alleged paternally-related brother, William Harvey b. 1614, while not unequivocally proven, is indicated to be of the E-M84, L29 haplogroup. Thus, if these disparate test results are correct, these two men can not be sons of the same father.

Following are the details of the test results of the descendants of these two ancestral immigrants to Colonial America :

Thomas Harvey b. 1617

Five living male direct line descendants of two sons of Thomas Harvey b. 1617, each with a different individually determined paper trail, have been Y-DNA tested and found to have remarkably consistent test results. These results include three unique markers exhibited by all testees who have been tested through at least 25 markers - ( "unique" when compared against *all* other Harvey "R"-haplogroup tested members). These unique "Tag" markers are as follows :

DYS 447 @ 26 alleles - (unique - not found in any other tested Harveys)

DYS 448 @ 20 alleles - (unique - not found in any other tested Harveys)

DYS 449 @ 31 alleles - (very seldom found in any other tested Harveys nor does it exist as a "Tag* marker allele for any other Harvey Group)

These "Tag" marker values can by used together, within the Harvey Y-DNA Project at FTDNA, as indicators of a very likely connection to descendants of the Thomas Harvey b. 1617 direct male line or to descendants of a family line closely paternally- related to Thomas Harvey b. 1617 in England.

Thomas Harvey b. 1643 and William Harvey b. 1645 are the two sons of Thomas Harvey b. 1617 who have been Y-DNA tested through five living male direct line descendants - one man descended through Thomas b. 1643 and four men descended through William b. 1645. An appropriate living male direct line descendant of the third son John Harvey b. 1647 has not been found for testing to-date.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

William Harvey b.1614 Four living male direct line descendants of three sons of Zachariah Harvey b. 1711 (great grandson of William Harvey b. 1614) have been Y-DNA tested as being of the E-M84, L29 haplogroup. Their relatedness is further confirmed through different individual paper trail research by each testee. Inasmuch as three sons (oldest b. 1736 and youngest b. 1758) of Zachariah Harvey b. 1711 have proven to be of identical haplogroup/very similar haplotype a strong case can be made that this Y-DNA E-M84 designation can also be attributed to the father of Zachariah. This would be Thomas Harvey b. 1682 who was a grand-son of Immigrant ancestor William Harvey b. 1614. With that assumption in mind, the last link for proving that the E-M84 haplogroup designation will also (probably) apply to William Harvey b. 1614, is to find and test a male direct line descendant of Thomas Harvey b. 1641 -- father of Thomas Harvey b. 1682 and grandfather of Zachariah Harvey b. 1711. Thus far no such living male descendant has been located.

John Harvey b. 1736, Zachariah Harvey b. 1744, and Isaiah Harvey b. 1758 are the three sons of Zachariah Harvey b. 1711 who have been Y-DNA tested through four living male direct line descendants - one man descended through John b. 1736, one man descended through Zachariah b. 1744 and two men descended through Isaiah b. 1758.

notes

From "The Harvey Book" by Oscar Jewett Harvey (1899)

In 1643, by order of the General Court, a list of “all the males able to beare Armes from xvj Yeares old to 60 yeares, within the seurall Towneshipps,” was made. Taunton’s list (see Plym. CoL Rec., VIII.: 195) contains fifty-four names, and the only Harvey in the list is “Thom Harvey.” (His brother William was at this time living in Boston.) Thomas was married about 1642 to Elizabeth Andrews (born in England in 1614), sister of Henry Andrews* of Taunton.

Thomas Harvey died in Taunton in 1651, aged thirty-four years; and a year or two later his widow was married to Francis Street of Taunton, to whom she bore a daughter named Mary, who was living in Taunton in 1724, unmarried. Francis Street died early in 1665 (William Harvey was one of the appraisers of his estate in June, ‘65), and on the ioth of the following December the widow Elizabeth was married (3d time) to Thomas Linkon, or Lincoln, the Taunton miller, whose grist.mill (built in 1652 or‘3) stood on the west side of Mill River, between the present Cohannet and Winthrop streets.

comments

Date of birth has also been erroneously reported to be 1616. Place of death has also been (erroneously?) reported to be Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

DNA Test evidence may prove / disprove the parent & sibling relationship, please advise by Discussion with any evidence.

notes

(5) THOMAS HARVEY,2 (Thomas1), born in Somersetshire, England, in 1617, came with his brother William to Dorchester, Mass., in 1636. [See page 26 ante.] Two years later he was settled at Cohannet, as is evidenced by the following deposition recorded in Plymouth Colony Records, Deeds, Vol. I., p. 38:

Thomas Harvey was not one of the "first and ancient purchasers" of Cohannet (one reason for this being that he was under twenty-one years of age when the purchase was made), but between 1639 and 1642 he and thirteen others were admitted as "proprietors of Taunton" upon the payment of twelve shillings each; by virtue of which payment, it was voted, the new proprietors--known as "12-shilling men"--had "and shall have a right in future divisions of land."

Thomas Harvey died in Taunton in 1651, aged thirty-four years; and a year or two later his widow was married to Francis Street of Taunton, to whom she bore a daughter named Mary, who was living in Taunton in 1724, unmarried. Francis Street died early in 1665 (William Harvey was one of the appraisers of his estate in June, '65), and on the 10th of the following December the widow Elizabeth was married (3d time) to Thomas Linkon, or Lincoln, the Taunton miller, whose grist-mill (built in 1652 or '3) stood on the west side of Mill River, between the present Cohannet and Winthrop streets.
