"Thomas Hawley is commonly believed to be a brother of Joseph Hawley (1603-1690). Given that the year of his birth is an assumption, he could possibly have been a son from a marriage of Joseph’s prior to Katharine Birdsey. We may never know for certain, but DNA evidence from the Family Tree DNA Hawley Surname Project confirms that the descendants of Thomas and Joseph are closely related. Thomas is considered the founder of the Massachusetts branch of the Hawley family."
"Thomas Hawley was an early settler of Roxbury, Massachusetts, but just what year has not been ascertained. His first wife was named Emma and she was buried 29 November 1651. Her son, Thomas, was baptized 8 October 1651 and she died not quite two months afterward. He married for the second time 2 February 1652, Dorothy Harbottle, the widow of Thomas Lamb. She was a member of Mr. Eliot’s church and married Mr. Lamb 16 July 1640, by whom she had two sons (Caleb and Joshua) and he died in 1646. Thomas Hawley was killed by Native Americans at the Sudbury Fight 21 April 1676 and Dorothy died 28 January 1699."
The Hawley Society: Thomas Hawley Biography
"The father of the three immigrants of this family who came to America and their two sisters is not known and though it is known that they were of the Derbyshire family, the English lineage has not been traced. Children: Joseph mentioned below. Hannah of Milford Connecticut married first John Ufford and second Captain John Beard. Elizabeth of Stratford Connecticut married John Booth. Thomas settled in Roxbury Massachusetts married Emma Robert of Rhode Island [sic] married Dorothy Harbottle Lamb widow of T. Lamb..." [Cutter, page 275]
Thomas Hawley was born 1609 in Parwich, Derby, England, and died April 21, 1676 in Middlesex, Sudbury, MA. He married Dorothy Harbottle on February 02, 1651/52 in Roxbury, Litchfield, CT.
Thomas Hawley came to America with his brother Joseph in 1629 from Parwich, Derbyshire, England. Joseph moved to Stratford, Conn and Thomas moved to Roxbury, MA. He was married to Emma Hawley and had one son Thomas born on Oct. 8, 1651 and died in child birth. His wife Emma died Nov. 11, 1651. Thomas married again to Dorothy Harbittle (Harbottle) Lamb (widow of Thomas Lamb) on February 02, 1651/52, in Roxbury, CT.
Thomas was an earlier settler in Roxbury, MA and was slain by the Indians while serving with Captain Wardsworth at Sudbury, MA on April 27, 1676. Thomas and his brother, Joseph came to America on a ship in the Winthrop fleet. One of these ships was the Mayflower on its second trip to the New World.
He and Dorothy had the following children:
Thomas' father was JOSEPH HAWLEY born about 1577 in Parwich, Derby, England.. He was married before 1599 to KATHERINE BOOTH, who was born about 1581 in Parwich, England. Their death dates are not known.
A Caveat dated July 14, 1698:
Whereas the inventory of th estate of Thomas Hawley, late of Roxbury, deceased, was made on August 22, 1676, a committee has been appointed about such land as he held at the time of his death, and whereas he possessed no land at the said time, being the land owned by Thomas Lamb, Sr., of Roxbury, deceased, and never by the said Lamb conveyed to the said Lamb's children or hei rs, "We Abiel Lamb, Mary Bayley, and Joshua Lamb, the child ren and heirs of the said Thomas Lamb do offer as a caveat to the said committee" that:
1. We are the legal possessors of said lands by inheritance. 2. The said Thomas Lamb, Sr., died intestate, his land descended to "Lamb his children and by no means to the said Hawleys." 3. That there has never been any administration granted o n the estate of the said Thomas Lamb which inventory of his estate was inventoried as Hawley's until letters of Administration were granted to us.
Reply was made by Edward Dorr and his wife Elizabeth (Hawley) Dorr, for themselves and in behalf of Joseph Hawley, son of said Hawley , and for John Booth and his wife Dorothy (Hawley) BoothThey claim they are rightfully possessed of the land by inheritance, and that their ancestor Thomas Hawley owned the lands in controversy in 1652, and died seized of the same, and his widow, "our mother," continued her possession of them to the day of her death, with no molestation from her first husband's children, or their descendants "the now plaintiffes"; they also bring out in respon e to the second point, that some of Lamb's children were young when the widow married Hawley and that he, their father-in-law [stepfather], raised them; also that they have quit-claimed their rights to the land upon payment by Hawley, and they, the Dorrs, etc., can produce the records of the same. In reply to the third point, they state that the widow always said her husband Lamb made a will, which could not be found, she, thinking it would someday appear, delayed the administration. Signed by Edward Dorr and Elizabeth D orr. Filed by the Judge of Probate on 28 July 1698.* Reference: RootsWeb's WorldConnect - SmartCopy: Apr 14 2017, 5:46:11 UTC
