About Thomas Holmes

Thomas was a "gentleman farmer"

After the deaths of his daughters & wife, brokenhearted, he returned to his home in England for a visit. When his visit was over, during his trip back to the US on the ship, he developed a carbuncle in his neck. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle A carbuncle is a strep infection. In the days before antibiotics, the carbuncle was lanced & encouraged to drain. Lancing the carbuncle & the carbuncle itself may have led to the strep infection entering the heart: know as myocarditis http://www.surgerydoor.co.uk/medical_conditions/Indices/M/myocardit...

Cause of death listed in cemetery records as "Infection of the Heart". He was 76.

His granddaughter, Ruth Ann Grassman tells me that the family always said that Thomas died from a broken heart & depression after the tragedy of losing his wife & three daughters. He died shortly after his wife passed away (2yrs.).

note by CHK: William "Bill" Holmes was born in 1881, Albert Holmes was born in 1883, My grandfather Joe (born in 1886), their sister Margaret was born in 1875 and died in 1896 when she was 21 (when Joe was 10), their sister Annie was born in 1877 and died in 1898 at the age of 21 (and when Joe was 12), if the young woman in the photo on the far right is their sister then it must be Olivia who was born in 1884 and died in 1911 at the age of 27 (the same year their mother died) and their father Thomas died in 1913 - a mere 2 years later.

I cannot imagine the heartache this family endured.

Thomas Holmes emigrated from Keithly or Keighly, England to New York

He met & married Sarah Rainey there. She had emigrated from Dublin, Ireland to New York. They were married in NYC & then moved to Cumberland County (NJ).
