'SIR PHILIP and SIR THOMAS HOWARD'

OCCUPATION Soldier

BURIAL LOCATION Lady Chapel; Chapel of St John Baptist

Sir Philip Howard was buried in St John the Baptist's chapel in Westminster Abbey on 15th April 1686. His name is inscribed on a modern stone over the vault. He was the third son of Sir William Howard of Naworth Castle in Cumberland and his wife Mary (daughter of 4th Lord Eure). In 1660 he was knighted at Canterbury and was admitted to Gray's Inn. On 23rd April 1668 he married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Robert Newton and widow of Sir John Baker, in St Martin in the Fields church in London (she was later buried at Cranbrook in Kent). They had a son Phillip.

His brother Colonel Thomas Howard, fourth son of Sir William, was buried on 21st July 1678 in the Duke of Richmond's vault in Henry VII's chapel, but he has no marker. He was Lieutenant of the Yeomen of the Guard and noted for his gallantry and duels. His wife Mary (daughter of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham and widow of the 1st Duke of Richmond) was buried in the vault on 28th November 1685.

Both brothers were concerned in the affair in 1653 which resulted in the execution of the Portuguese ambassador's brother Don Pantaleo de Sa.
