Thomas Howerton, Jr., was the son of Capt. Thomas Howerton, Sr (1764-1828) and Frances Jones (1768-1812). His father's second marriage was to Elizabeth Hunt Graves, and his third marriage was to Tabitha Hunt.
“Major” Thomas Howerton, Jr. served as a private in Captain Joseph Sanford’s Troup of Cavalry, 69th Virginia Regiment, Virginia Militia from Halifax County, VA from 1 October 1813 to 15 February 1814.
The Cooper-Klein public family tree states that after the War of 1812, Thomas returned to Halifax County, VA, then moved to Mecklenburg County, VA.
He married December 5, 1826, Maria Martin Moore of Franklin County, NC and they lived there for a time before moving to Hillsborough, Orange County, NC where they appear in the 1850 census.
In the 1860 census, he appears with wife Maria, daughter Emily and son Albertus in the census of Salisbury, Rowan County, NC. In Hillsborough and in Salisbury he is listed as a hotel owner/proprietor.
