  • The manor of Wood Hall passed from Alan Fergent, as Jekells did, to the Vere family, and under them was holden as half a knight's fee: the lands lie in this parish, Hempsted, and Little Samford.
  • In the reign of King Edward the Third, this estate was successively in the possession of William Crochman, and John and William, his sons; and the latter left it to his only daughter, Mary, or Mariota; who was married, first, to John Wyneslow, Esq. of Wyneslow Hall, also named Crochmans, in Hempsted; her second husband was Thomas Holgyll: on her death, in 1410, she was in possession of the mansion and estate of Woodhall, and was succeeded by her son, William Wyncelow, who, dying in 1419, left his only daughter, Joan, his heiress; succeeded, on her decease in 1431, by her kinsman, Walter Huntington, son of John Huntington, son of Elizabeth, sister of William Crochman, the younger. Walter, on his decease in 1443, was succeeded by Thomas, his son and heir, who married Margaret, daughter of William Tyrell, Esq. of Rawreth, by whom he had two daughters, co-heiresses : Margaret, married to John Paris, of Linton; and Anne, the wife of William Mordaunt, Esq. chief prothonotary of the king's bench, who had with her this estate. Robert Mordaunt, who died in 1572, was his son or grandson; and his son Philip having died before him, he was succeeded by his grandson, John Mordaunt, on whose death, in 1574, his brother James succeeded to this estate, but died in the year following, and was succeeded by Robert, his brother, who, at the time of his decease, in 1602, was in possession of this and other estates in Hempsted, Samford, and elsewhere.

  • The reputed manor of Dales or Caldecots was a considerable time holden under the earls of Oxford, by the Thunderley family, till it passed to that of Att-Dale, in 1346, by the marriage of the daughter of Andrew de Thunderley to William Att-Dale. In 1445, it was in the possession of Nicholas Caldecot, or Calcot; and of sir James Caldecot in 1485; who, in 1498, did homage for this possession at Castle Hedingham: he died in 1502, and Thomas, his son, is supposed to have died without issue, for the next recorded owner is his sister, Muriel Caldecot,† the second wife of Robert Mordaunt,‡ of Turvey, in Bedfordshire, to whom she brought this estate; in whose family it continued, till it was purchased of John Mordaunt, esq. in 1652, by Dr. Bromfield, who gave it to the poor of St. Andrew's, Holborn, London.

    • † Arms of Caldecott : Gules, on a chevron argent, three dolphins haurient sable.
    • ‡ William, the son and heir of Robert Mordaunt, married Anne, daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Huntington, by whom he had four sons and six daughters, and left this estate to George Mordaunt, his fourth son, who, having no issue, gave it to his next brother, Edmund, who was succeeded by Henry Mordaunt, his eldest son, whose eldest son of the same name was his successor, and living in 1620, who married Barbara, daughter of Henry Bradbury, esq. of Littlebury, by whom he had, besides other children, his eldest son Henry, who married Lettice, daughter of John Holgate, esq. of Walden, by whom he had his son John, the last of the family who had this estate. ___________

  • SIMON HUNTINGTON, the Puritan Immigrant.
  • Our knowledge of his ancestry is derived from a report of investigations made by Gustav Anjou, a genealogist, for Henry Edwards Huntington.
  • One Thomas Huntington, of whom nothing else is known with absolute certainty, had three children born in England (perhaps in Hempstead) Richard, Thomas and Elizabeth. Richard, the oldest child, born about 1460, married in 1498 Alice, daughter of Simon Loring, of Little Sampford, and had five sons, Robert, Christopher, born Dec. 18, 1500, John, Simon, (who died young,) and Richard. Christopher, the second of the sons of Richard, married, April 7, 1537, Elizabeth, daughter of George Bailey, (or Bayley,) of London, and had issue George, born Jan. 9, 1538, and seven other sons and one daughter. George married, Aug. 5, 1580, Anne, daughter of Robert Fenwick, and had issue (1,) Margaret, born May 11, 1581; married Jan. 27, 1607 Joannes Spencer; (2,) Samuel, born Feb. 16, 1582, an officer in the army of King Charles the First; (3,) Simon, born Aug. 7, 1583, our ancestor; (4,) George, born June 2, 1585, and married, Jan. 15, 1609, Marie Whitewood; (5,) Andrew, born Jan. 18, 1587, and married, June 1, 1609, Elizabeth, daughter of William Rockwell; (6.) Robert, born March 6, 1589. Thus the descent of our common ancestor is traced back through four generations.
  • Simon Huntington was probably married once before his marriage with Margaret Baret, June 21, 1627. though of this it is impossible to speak with certainty. Margaret Baret was the daughter of Christopher Baret, who was Mayor of Nowich, England, in 1634 and 1648, and died in August, 1649. * .... etc. ___________________

Info from "The Huntington's in America", page 11.

The book states, "One Thomas Huntington, of whom nothing else is known with absolute certainty, had three children born in England (perhaps in Hempstead), Richard, Thomas, and Elizabeth. Richard, the oldest child, born about 1460, married in 1498 Alice, daughter of Simon Loring, of Little Sampford, and had five sons, Robert, Christopher, ...., John, Simon, (who died young,) and Richard......"

I can find no other info on them in the Huntington book yet.

This is the first Huntington in the book, although Simon, 4 generations later, and listed as Number one in the Huntington Family in America.

The book states at the beginning: " 1. SIMON HUNTINGTON, the Puritan Immigrant. Our knowledge of his ancestry is derived from a report of investigations made by Gusav Anjou, a genealogist, for Henry Edwards Huntington. (1.3.6.7.6.2.2.4.)" (the numbers indicate the descendancy for Henry Edwards Huntington in the book)

It then lists his children as shown above.
