Biography

Thomas Isham, the fifth son, was baptized at 1 ytch-
ley 20 December 1600, and is described as of Radclive, county Bucks. He married at Pytchley, 28 August 1628 Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Denton, Kn.gb , o Hillesden, county Bucks. Shewas baptized 0 May 1010 at Stowe, county Bucks, and dying on the 20th of Septem- ber 1607, in the 57th year of her age, was buried at Hillesden 23 September 1607. Thomas Isham survived his wife but a short time. Her devotion had relieved h.s blindness during her life, and now at last he dies at Wheatfield, county Oxon, 0 February 1009-70. At Wheat - field there is a monument to his memory ; and at Hilles- den there are two monuments; one, to the memory ot Elizabeth Isham, which mentions two sons am one daughter; the other to the memory of Thomas Isham their only surviving child. Euseby Isham their hnt child was buried at Hillesden 2 August 1029 and Ann Is mm their daughter was buried there 9 September 0.2. Tl.ou.as, the survivor, grew up, and in h.s w.U .(,(,, 92 Bence) describes himself as "of tbe Middle Temple, London," and desires to be buried in the Pans . Church ol Hillesden, which was done 21 July 1676. H.s parents being dead, and having neither brother nor sister and being unmarried, he leaves his possessions partly to tbe heir male of his cousin-gerinan Henry Isham. and partly to his cousin Francis Drake of Stretton Audley, whom he makes his residuary legatee. There is a letter of his, the only one 1 believe extant, in the possession id' the Verneys, to whom he was related, dated 18 May 1071, contradictitig a rumour as to his marriage. The will of Thomas Isham, born 1000 (the father of this Thomas of the Inner Temple), dated 1 February 1600-70, was proved 23 February 1600-70 by Thomas Isham the son (P.C.C, 22 Penn). He desires to be buried at Hillesden if he dies near that place, or else where his executor shall think fit. lie was, as we know, buried at Wheatfield. This Thomas Isham and his wife Elizabeth figure prominently in the volumes of the " Verney Memoirs." She, as a Denton of Hillesden, was aunt to Hir Ralph Verney, and appears as "Aunt Isham." Their nicknames in the family are " Jugge " and " Panny." Thomas Isham is " Panny," and his health is a constant source of anxiety to his better half. She was a most voluminous corre- spondent, with not an idea, of spelling. All the more entertaining are her many letters, now preserved at Clay- don, the home of the Verneys. She gives a very graphic picture of the troubled life of the time of the Rebellion. And 1 can only refer the reader to the "Verney Memoirs "* for the troubles of the worthy couple.
