Jones was a veteran admiralty lawyer and a member of the Prize Commissioners board on the question of the American seizure of the German liner Europa as a prize of war, died yesterday in his home at 101 East Seventy-fourth Street, after a brief illness.
His age was 64.

In his practice, Mr. Jones specialized in maritime law, representing the Maritime Law Association of the United States at the Conferences of the Comite Maritime International held in Amsterdam in 1927 and in Antwerp in 1930. After the sinking of the submarine S-51 by the Steamship City of Rome in 1925, Mr. Jones acted as counsel for the dependents of the men who had lost their lives in the disaster. Damages aggregating $300,000 were sought in suits brought against the Ocean Steamship Company, owner of the steamship.

Born in Petersburg, Virginia, he was the son of the late Walter Nelson and Ada Vaughan Jones. He was a graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1899 and the next year received his master’s degree from Princeton University. He studied law at the University of Virginia and was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1902.

For the next nine years Mr. Jones conducted a law practice in Norfolk, Virginia, and then in 1911; came to New York and joined the firm of Harrington, Bigham & Englar. A year later he was admitted to the New York Bar and became a partner in the firm. He continued as a member of that firm and its successor firm Bigham, Englar, Jones & Houston until his death. In the meantime, he was admitted to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court and the Bars of many of the United States Circuit Courts of Appeal and district courts. In 1944 he was appointed Prize Commissioner in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, which court was given jurisdiction of the entire Atlantic Ocean and tributary waters.

Mr. Jones married twice his first marriage was to Olga Hasbrouck on May 6, 1911. They had one child, Catesby Thomas, Jr. Mrs. Jones died in 1913. In 1916 Jones married Louisa Brooke. There are two daughters by this marriage, Mary Virginia Catesby and Mrs. Hjalmar Hjorth Boysen, III

He was a trustee of Hampden Sydney College, Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, and Seaman's House in this city. During the Recent World War II acted as associate Government appeal agent for Draft Board No. 50 here.
A member of the American Bar Association, he also belonged to the New York State Bar Association, Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Maritime Law Association of the United States, Virginia Historical Society, Seamen's Friend Society, University of Virginia Law Association, The Virginians," Visiting Committee 1 Harvard Forest, Sons of the Revolution, Society of Colonial Wars and the Jamestowne Society. His clubs included the Century Association and the Grolier Club.
