  • ' Thomas Lennard, 1st and last Earl of Essex was born on 13 May 1654.1 He was the son of Francis Lennard, 14th Lord Dacre and Elizabeth Bayning, Countess of Shepey.1 He married Lady Anne Palmer, daughter of Charles II Stuart, King of Great Britain and Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland, on 16 May 1674.1 He died on 30 October 1715 at age 61, without issue.1
  • He succeeded to the title of 15th Lord Dacre [E., 1321] on 12 May 1662.1 He was created 1st Earl of Essex [England] on 5 October 1674.1 On his death death, his earldom became extinct and his barony fell into abeyance between his two daughters.1

Thomas Lennard, 1st Earl of Sussex (13 May 1654 – 30 October 1715) was a British peer. He became Earl of Sussex in 1674 when he married Lady Anne Palmer. The Baron Dacre title became abeyant in 1715 following his death.[1]

Lennard was a supporter of cricket which developed into a major sport during his lifetime. His 1677 accounts include an item which refers to £3 being paid to him when he went to a cricket match being played at ye Dicker, which was a common near Herstmonceux in East Sussex.[2]
