Biography:
Lone War was born in March 1872, to unknown Sioux parents, both from Montana. It is not known when he started using the English name Thomas but he is referred to as such in the Culp letter dated February 17, 1934. Sometime in 1892, he married Brings Blue Hair, aka Jennie Thunder Hawk, daughter of Chief Thunder Hawk, and with her had four (4) children; Mary, Anna, Martin, and Mattie.
According to Carla Joinson in her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Lone War was admitted to the Canton Asylum on April 28, 1908, at age 52, and diagnosed with Epileptic dementia (Epilepsy and dementia have a bidirectional relationship, and people with epilepsy are more likely to develop dementia than those without epilepsy. The mental disease manifests itself with brief periods of increased amnesia or unresponsiveness. We see involuntary repeating movements, often of the hands and arms, or the face (chewing, lip-smacking, or swallowing.)
In the letter dated February 17, 1934, to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Dr. L.L. Culp advises that Lone War is named Thomas, died at the Canton Asylum on December 24, 1909, and is buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery in tier 4 plot 32
His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
