Dr. John J. Dickey Diary, Fleming County, KY

AMERICA MARCUM LINDEN

I was born on Red Bird Creek in Clay County, February 13, 1839. My father was Alfred Marcum. He was born on Wild Cat Creek, Buncombe County, NorthCarolina, March 2, 1803. His father was Thomas Marcum, who immigrated first from Buncombe County, North Carolina to Virginia and Located on the Potomac River. He did not stay there long, for he came to Red Bird, ClayCounty, when my father was 12 years old, which would make it 1815. He died at TravelerRest and is buried on Red Bird. per Jesse Wilson *** I do not know which came first or whether they came together.**

My grandfather had a brother. He is the grandfather of Thomas Marcum of Catlettsburg, ex-Registrarofthe land office. Tom's father was William.

Census:

1820 - Clay County, Kentucky

(note: They appear to have settled on Bar Creek on Red Bird River, some seven miles above Oneida, not as the crow flys but as the river flows. You almost meet yourself comming back on some curves. per remarks of Jesse Wilson)Mary and Thomas settled in Clay County, Kentucky when they first came to Kentucky, but before 1850, they moved to Owsley County Kentucky. In Owsley they lived, died and are buried on the waters of Big Sturgeon near the mouth of Brush Branch. per James F Bowman 1963
