About Thomas Martin
- History of Chester County, Pennsylvania, with genealogical and biographical sketches (1881), by John Smith Futhey; Gilbert Cope. pp. 23, 652-653. [https://archive.org/stream/cu31924005813518#page/n931/mode/2up]
p. 23:
The "Unicorne" from Bristoll arrived here the 16th of the 10th month, 1685; Thomas Cooper commander. The passengers names are as followeth: Tho: Martin, Margery Martin, Mary Martin, Sarah Martin, Hannah Martin, Rachel Martin . . .
p. 652:
MARTIN, THOMAS, with Margery (Mendenhall), his wife, came from Bedwin Magna, in Wiltshire, in 1685, bringing children, - Mary, Sarah, Hannah, and Rachel. They settled in Middletown, where their son Moses, and probably other children, were born. We find George and Elinor Martin, for whom we can assign no other parentage. These children married as follows: Mary to James Whitaker, 1690; Sarah to William Shewin; Rachel to Thomas Woodward, 1704; Moses, b. 1/9/1685-6, m. Margaret Battin, in 1714; George, m. Lydia Buffington; Elinor, m. John Scarlet, 1715.
- Genealogy of the Sharpless family, by Gilbert Cope; Henry Fishwick; Joseph Lemuel Chester, pp. 169, 342-343. [https://archive.org/stream/genealogyofsharp1887cope#page/342/]
pp. 342-343:
Thomas Martin and wife, Margery (p. 169), brought with them, from England, four daughters, Mary, Sarah, Hannah and Rachel. A son, Moses, was born after their arrival, 1, 9, 1685-6, and they are also believed to have been the parents of George, who m. Lydia Buffington, and settled in West Bradford twp., and of Elinor, who m. 1715, John Scarlet, and removed to Berks Co., Pa. Thomas was a wheelwright, and seems to have been somewhat of a land speculator. In 1709, he obtained a patent for 90 acres of overplus land, cut off from the Sharpless tract in Middletown, where he already owned 200 acres. He and his wife sold some of this land Jan. 16, 1719-20, which is about the last date they have been noticed.
Thomas Martin actually married Margery Mildenhall b1655, daughter of Thomas and Joane (Stroud) Mendenhall/Mildenhall. It is doubtful that Thomas and Joane had a daughter named Catherine.
