About Thomas McClendon
Note: From A History of the Mcclendon Family in America: Thomas came to America in 1696 with his father Dennis and his mother Elizabeth. He married Eleanor Bush in 1714. It is thought that Thomas and Elinor had eight children, but in asking for a land grant in Bladen County, NC (1741-6) he stated he had seventeen in his family. This may have included slaves and probably did as he was entitled to 50 acres for each member, including slaves. Thomas was appointed Road Commissioner "for ye King's Highway" a great honor and responsibility at the time. The Road began on the upper side of Great Contenen Creek and extended to the bounds of Craven County. Thomas was a vestryman in St. Patrick's Parish, New Bern, NC
Actual deed records prove that Thomas married Elizabeth Bush in 1716 at the death of her father William Bush. William Bush's will proves that his daughter Elinor is already married to Thomas' oldest brother Francis McClendon. In 1728, Elizabeth and Elinor's brother John dies leaving his widow Mary Bryan Bush. Also around this time, Thomas Jr is born and Elizabeth dies. Thomas marries Mary Bryan Bush in 1730. Thomas grants John Bush Jr a gift of land which indicates he's age 21; there were four other children who probably joined the McClendon household and increased his family number.
