Do not confuse this Thomas with Thomas Moore, of Dorchester & Windsor.
Date and place of birth have also been (erroneously?) reported to be 1574 at Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England.
The earliest firm record that I have concerns a Thomas Moore who would have been born in
England sometime around 1585 or so. He was probably in the area of Southwold, Suffolk on the coast northeast of London. It was here that he married. His wife's name was Ann, but her last name is unknown. They had a child baptized there in 1630 and must have left almost immediately afterwards for America. The family sailed to Salem and in 1631, Thomas Moore was sent by John Mason of Salem to settle in the Province of New Hampshire. It would seem he died there, or possibly returned to Salem to die. He had passed away by July 11, 1636 because at that time there was a record of Thomas Moore son of Widow Moore and his wife are received as inhabitants of Salem, Massachusetts.' Nothing else is known about Thomas Moore Senior. Ann Moore was a midwife in Salem and the last note of her there was on August 17, 1668 when she sold her house and lot in Salem. By that time her son had moved to Long Island so she had elected to remain in Salem, perhaps with another of her children. I am only aware of two children, Thomas junior and Mary who married Joseph Grafton in Salem. There was that son baptized in 1630 http://www.billputman.com/Moore.pdf
Almost nothing is known about Thomas Moore of Salem himself. We only know about his widow Ann and two of their children: Mary Moore and Thomas Moore, Jr from Salem deeds, church and court records. These records only reveal the identity of two children Mary Moore of Salem who married Joseph Grafton [1] and Thomas Moore, Jr who married first Martha Youngs and second Katherine. [2] No births, marriages or deaths are recorded in Salem Vital Records. However, we know that the widow Ann had a family of five. [1][3] so there were possibly three other unidentified children living in 1636 in Salem besides Thomas and Mary assuming Mary was living with her mother and included in this count and that Thomas had his own household based on his separate grant of land. [1]
There is absolutely no evidence that Thomas Moore’s wife Ann’s maiden name was Scarlett, Grafton or Carte. Her maiden name and origins are unknown. We simply know her first name was Ann. Her daughter’s husband was Joseph Graton and in some cases researchers have confused his surname Graton with her maiden name. A familysearch ancestral file shows Ann married to a Mr. Scarlett but it is completely unsourced. The name Ann Scarlett probably originated from the will of Ann Scarlet dated 2d 1st mo., 1639 who was the sister of Joseph Grafton [1][4].
In 1928, Henry Wyckoff Belknap wrote “The Grafton Family of Salem” in the Historical Collections of the Essex Institute: Vol LXIV published by The Essex Institute. He asserted that Thomas Moore, Sr of Salem came from Southwold, Suffolk, England. [1] However, he provided no source for this claim. We have no record of what ship he came on or what year he arrived. We have no record of his parents. We do know that his son Thomas Moore Jr moved to Southold, Suffolk, New York. It is possible that the author simply confused Southold, Suffolk, New York with Southwell, Suffolk, England. In recent years his birthplace has even been listed as Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England on the Internet and there is absolutely not basis for this claim. However we do know that his stepson’s family originated in Southwold so it is possible they share a common origin. [1]
Elston believes that Thomas Moore of Salem is the same Thomas Moore who was sent by John Mason of Salem to settle in the Province of New Hampshire. [5] However, this is not proven. It could have been the Thomas Moore of Connecticut or another Thomas Moore.
Thomas Moore of Salem died before 11 July 1636 we know this because his *widow* Ann and his son Thomas Jr joined the church of Salem on that date. We do not know where he died. [6]
We can extract a few clues about his family from the following records:
The following list of children of Thomas MOORE and Ann has been circulating the Internet but it is also completely unsourced:
The only two children that are proven by the records above are Mary Moore and Thomas Moore. Some of these children are claimed to be from Southwell which seems extremely unlikely as Southwell is nowhere near Southwold. Richard’s middle name “Elvin” may be confused with the maiden name of Thomas Moore, Jr’s step-mother. This list of children is very suspicious and probably wrong other than the two mentioned above.
When was Thomas Moore of Salem born? His daughter Mary Moore married Joseph Grafton [1]. They had a daughter Priscilla (Grafton) Gardner [10] of Salem married to John Gardner on 20 Feb 1653 in Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts. [11] Based on this fact we might estimate that Priscilla Grafton was perhaps born about 1626 and therefore her mother Mary Moore was probably born between 1600 and 1608. That would mean that Thomas Moore was probably born before 1588 and possibly earlier. That’s a very rough estimate but it is the best I can come up with at this point. We might assume that Ann was about the same age.
Son Thomas Moore Jr married Martha Youngs in Salem. [2][13] Thomas, Jr. was in Salem until at least 1650 before moving to Southold, Long Island, where Rev John Youngs was located. [2] He must have moved to Southhold, Long Island, New York in about 1651 when his daughter, Elizabeth married Richard Clark. [2] Daughter Mary Moore married Joseph Grafton and died in Salem. [12][1]

Thomas Moore, Sr was likely associated with the ministry of Reverend John Youngs, from Southwold, Suffolk, England. However, this family appears to have possibly migrated earlier than Rev Youngs.

The Immigrant
Thomas Moore and his family were in Salem, Mass in the 1630's. Thomas Moore, Sr. died there in 1636. Thomas Moore, Jr. married, Martha, the sister of Reverend John Youngs of Southold, Long Island. He was in Southold, Long Island, New York by 1650 and died there in 1691.
Born: Possibly abt 1580, in, or near, possibly Southwold, England
Spouse of Thomas, Sr.: Ann (____). She survived him.
Spouses of Thomas, Jr.:
1) 1635-1638 Margaret Youngs, sister of Rev John Youngs of Southold, Long Island; as well as Joseph and Christopher Youngs, also immigrants. Probably mother to all of his children and probably married in England. She died June 27, 1671, in Southold, Long Island, New York
2) Aft 1671. (Death of first wife) Catherine Westcott, Per Suffolk Co Register, Vol 1, No. 1, Jun 1975, fr Ned E-mail: Possibly married 1st Thomas Doxy, 2nd Daniel Lane. She survived him.
Migration: At least by 1636. It is likely that most of the children of Thomas Moore, Sr were adults or close to it. If he was born in 1580, he would have been 56. His kids would have been from teenagers up to 40 years in age. I don't know if all of the family came at once, or if all of the children came to America. It is most likely that Thomas, Jr. and Margaret Youngs were married in England and came together.
Residences: It appears that Thomas, Sr. lived and died in Salem, Mass. It appears that Thomas, Jr. was in Salem until at least 1650, then to Southold, Long Island, where Rev John Youngs was located. It appears that most of his children married Southold sons and daughters.
Died: Thomas, Sr. Before 1636 in prob Salem. Suffolk County Historical Society Register, Vol 1, No. 1, Jun 1975, reports that wife Ann joined the church as a widow in 1636. Thomas Moore, Jr. died June 27, 1691, in Southold, Long Island, New York
Will / Estate: I have not located yet, if there is one.

Still haven't found a source dedicated to this family. Most of my info has come in bits and pieces from:

Suffolk Co Register I don't know if there is a relationship with our Thomas Moore and the Rev John Moore of Southampton, but this is available from Blair's and probably other booksellers on the web:

Notes, Questions, Errata
As with any of the "top ten" names, tracking folks of this name is a real chore because it's so hard to place individuals in the right families, especially when so many people used the same first names over and over.
There was a John Moore in Newtown, Long Island. I'm not sure if our Thomas Moore is kin to that John Moore or not.
