About Thomas Mumford

notes

apparent relative of Richard Moumford

We know this Captain Thomas Mumford existed, indeed, is written of even by Captain John Smith. We do not have proof that the Edward we show as his son is our Edward. With that caveat, I will add Thomas as the head of this line, as many show. It seems likely. But we might also have two Thomases. I think the probable younger Thomas is the older's son.

From Margaret Ann Butler's Mumford documents, 1607-1801, posted on the Web, 2004, who through existing English and American historical documents, pieced together a long collection of Mumford cites and documents in Virginia, and of Northern and Eastern North Carolina. There follow some pertinent ones for Thomas:

"1607 Thomas Mumford arrives in the New World with Capt. John Smith and helps establish the colony of Jamestown, Virginia. (Source: Montford-Munford. Family of Virginia and Georgia and Allied Families, by Lyon and Vesely, 1978, p.1.; Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol. II, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1981, p.736.)

"1609 Thomas Mumford was one of the adventurers in the Second Virginia Company [from England]. (Source: Montford-Munford. Family of Virginia and Georgia and Allied Families, by Lyon and Vesely, 1978, p.2.)

"1618/19 In a document this date, Thomas Mumford is listed in " A Complete List in Alphabetical Order of the 'Adventurers to Virginia, with the Several Amounts of Their Holding." (Source: The Records of Virginia Company of London, Vol. III, Library of Congress, 1933, p. 79.)

"1620 Thomas Mountford listed as adventurer to Virginia who paid his sum to Sir Thomas Smith, Knight, late Treasurer of the Company of Virginia. (Source: The Records of Virginia Company of London, Vol. III, Library of Congress, 1933, p. 317.)

"1623-24 In document this date, Thomas Mounfird, gentleman, listed as one who emigrated to Virginia. (Source: The Records of the Virginia Company, ""November 4, 1623 to May 24, 1624," Vol. 4, Library of Congress, 1935, p. 364.)

"1629/30 Capt. Thomas Mountford, in a sworn affidavit, states he is 42 [born 1587]. (Source: Adventurers of Purse and Person. Virginia 16071625, 3rd Ed., p. 427, quoting from York Co. Deeds. Orders. Wills &c9, 1691-94, p.195.)"

Brenda, last name not given, comments on GenForum in 2001:

"The first of the Mumford name in Va. was Thomas Mumford, gentleman, who came on the First Supply. In June 1608, Captain John Smith left the fort at Jamestown to discover Chesapeake Bay. He made a complete circle of the bay, accompanied by fourteen men, among them Thomas Mumford. Thomas Mumford also accompanied Capt. Smith in his 2nd voyage made with 12 men. Thomas is mentioned frequently in Smith's Narratives, but his fate is unknown. He was a member of the 2nd Va. Company of London and may have returned to England.

"A Thomas Mumford patented 200 acres in New Norfolk Co. (Nansemond) March 5, 1646, His next patent was dated Oct. 24, 1650, for 700 acres in the same locality. This Thomas Mumford was very probably the ancestor of the Mumfords and Munfords of Va. The Nansemond records are destroyed, so the disposition of his land is not known."

Dorothy M. Sparks, on the Mumford GenForum, comments December 13, 1999, that "...the father of... Edward Mumford was Capt. Thomas Mumford, gentleman, who 'came over' on the 'First Supply' in 1607, sailed (twice)... with Capt. John Smith, in 1608, (and) was a member of the 2d Virginia Co., in 1609. I've only been able to document two children--Thomas, b.1650, m. Rebecca. Son Thomas was also a landowner. The second son was, I believe.... Edward.... He was b. 1653; m. 1679; to Mary Watkins, b. 1653..."
