Thomas Pitman (Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) shows up in the tax records in 1700 (VAGEN-V24, Issue 2, p. 79). He purchased from Henry Norton 100 acres in Lawnes Creek Parish bounded by Indian Cabin Branch, Mr. Francis Mason, decd., John Bynam, and the Green Swamp about 1704 (VASUR-DE1 p. 64). This land is also next door to his uncle William's land.

Before 19 Aug 1712, he had migrated to Isle of Wight. On that day, he purchased from his uncle William Pitman (Thomas2, Thomas1) 100 acres of land (VASUR-DE1 p. 64). He continued to purchase several plots of land over the next 13 years which help immensely in identifying the migration patterns of his sons. He marries Elizabeth Lancaster, daughter of Robert Lancaster. Robert Lancaster in his will dated 28 Apr 1720 mentions some of Thomas' children but not all of the living ones (VAIOW-WL1 p. 82). Wife Elizabeth is not mentioned in the will and probably predeceased Thomas Pitman.

Thomas PITMAN Jr. died between 3 Mch 1728 and 28 Sep 1730. He wrote his will about a year before his death. His wife Elizabeth is not mentioned in his will, and it is assumed that she had died before March 1728. The will is recorded in Isle of Wight Co VA, as follows:

Isle of Wight County this third Day of March 1728--

Whereas I Thomas PITMAN of the County aforesaid do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. First, my Soul I desire to return to God who gave it, My Body to be decently Buried, and for my Estate real and personal to be disposed of as follows (viz) My Son Thomas I desire may have an entry of Land lying up the Creek containing an hundred and fifty Acres and he having two thousand Nails to build him a house out of the Estate. For my Son Samuel I desire may have the Plantation lying on Dicks Marsh bounded by a line of Mark Trees containing an hundred Acres. To my Son Robert a piece of Land lying on the upper side of the Long Grand containing fifty Acres. For my Son Ambrose the upper part of the Survey lying above the Marsh branch containing forty Acres. For my sons John and Arthur the place called the hedge pen Neck and containing One Hundred Acres. My Sons Samson and Joseph my mannour plantation containing an hundred and Ten Acres. To my six Daughters Five Pounds to each being Ann, Olive, Pratta, Elizabeth, Lucy, and Faith and for the rest of my Estate after my debts are paid I desire may be equally shared by my Trustees among all my children. I do appoint Robert Lancaster, Wm John Dunkley and Robert Monger jun, Trustees and my son Thomas PITMAN Executor of this my last Will. I do desire my Trustees may value my Estate and equal share it without any Cost, Charges and carefully take care of it.

(There are some problems with this will. The dates match with Tom the 2nd and the wife information. The names of the children, however, match up with Tom the 3rd).

Brothers, John and Robert Pitman (sons of Thomas Pitman d. 1730 of Meherrin River) are mentioned below. Their father left them about 50 acres each in his will of 1730:

“To my Son Robert a piece of Land lying on the upper side of the Long Grand containing fifty Acres. For my sons John and Arthur the place called the hedge pen Neck and containing One Hundred Acres.”

John Pitman died about 1781, leaving a will and apparently only daughters. Arthur died 1758 and left no known heirs. Each seem to have stayed in Southampton County, VA.

Page 4, Rocky Mount Evening Telegram, Sept 27, 1960… Hugh B. Johnston:

“Arthur Taylor may have been a native of Surry County, Virginia. On july 14, 1733, he witnessed the will of Matthew Strickland in Isle of Wight County. On January 23, 1737-38, Thomas Taylor, Arthur Taylor, and Robert Pitman appraised the estate of Augustine Nixon. On July 14, 1742, Arthur A Powell sold Arthur Taylor of Isle of Wight County for 0,5,0 pounds a tract of 83 acres south of Sweat House swamp on a branch formerly patented by Nathaniell Powell, witnessed by William Bynum, John Edwards, and Robert Pittman.” … “On February 13, 1755, Arthur Taylor of Edgecombe County sold Thomas Turner of Southampton County, Virginia forr 63 pounds current Virginia Money 75 acres in the latter County, ‘being the Plantation Whereon the said Arthur Taylor formerly Lived’ bounded by Joseph Lane and Tarrarah Creek…”

(the mention of Tarrarah Creek (Tarraro) puts this property near the land of Thomas Pitman d1730 of Meherrin River)
