THOMAS2 POLLARD (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1670 in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, and died April 04, 1724 in Billerica, Mass. USA.He married SARAH FARMER November 06, 1692 in Billerica, Mass. USA, daughter of EDWARD FARMER and MARY BROWN.She was born April 01, 1669 in Ansley, Warwickshire, England, and died May 03, 1725 in Billerica, Mass. USA. Notes for THOMAS POLLARD: About 1660 or so there sailed from England and landed at Portsmouth, N.H., the families of Hill, Coburn, Blodgett and Pollard. These families settled in Middlesex Co., Mass. Thomas was the first Pollard of this branch, to come to the USA.

  • Sarah Farmer, wife of Thomas, was also his cousin from his mother's side.
  • Thomas came to Billerica, Mass. in 1690 from Coventry, England and in 1692 was living in Billerica, Mass. where he purchased the lot and proprietors rights of William Hale, near the fordway, on the Concord River. In 1708 he received a grant of thirty acres of land situated between the road to the ford and the road which turns east from it. He erected a dwelling on the original land; this house was the birthplace of his grandson, Asa Pollard, hero at Bunker Hill. It was destroyed by fire in 1910 and a new dwelling erected in 1913. This place also burned down. This land remained in the possession of the family until 1893 when William Pollard, a descendant, died without heirs, and the property passed into alien hands. Thomas Pollard accumulated a substantial estate, as we know by the Middlesex Co. records, "but his chief wealth was his ten stalwart sons and four daughters". He served in the Indian wars (1706) for the relief of Dunstable. He and his wife Sarah were buried in the Old Corner Burial Grounds, near the junction of the Boston and Salem roads. Two brown stones, crudely inscribed, still stand to mark their last resting place. These stones are inscribed: "T.P. 1724" and "S.P. 1725".
  • He died in Billerica in 1724. More About SARAH FARMER: Christening: August 19, 1671, Coventry, Warwickshire, England

__________

Research There is quite a bit on the Billerica Pollards in "The History of Billerica'and also the NEHGS library has copies of "The Pollards in America"

My mother's maiden name is Pollard. I have information on the Billerica, Mass. Pollards.

According to the History of Monroe, Thomas Pollard, son of William and Mary Farmer Pollard, came from Coventry, England about 1692 and settled in Billerica. He married November 1692, his cousin, Sarah Farmer. He died April 4, 1724. She died May 3, 1725. They had fourteen children. One son, John, was the father of Asa Pollard, first man killed at the battle of Bunker Hill.

Edward, 4th generation from Thomas and Sarah was born April 11, 1756 and served in the Revolutionary War. He came to Ryegate, Vermont, in 1787 and bought land, part of which was later owned by Horace Chamberlin. He married March 21 1793, Polly Wolcott of Barnet, Vermont.

Nathaniel Lane Taylor researched the Farmer family. His web page is located at http://nltaylor.net/ and there you’ll find a copy of his article “Genealogist John Farmer discovers his ancestry: the Warwickshire family of Edward ^1 Farmer, Isabel^1 (Farmer) (Wyman) (Blood) Green, and Thomas^1 Pollard, of Billerica, Massachusetts” New Eng. From the Billerica vital records: “Mr. Edward Farmer above mentioned emigrated from Warwickshire in England. He had one daughter, Sarah besides above who married Thomas Pollard and is not recorded.”

Edward emigrated from England to Billerica about 1671. [1, 2]

The book on the Pollards at my library is "History of the Pollard Family in America" It mentions very little about the Pollards that stayed in England. On page 37 it mentions William of Coventry married about 1650, Mary, daughter of John and Isabell (Barbage) Farmer of Ansley and Great Packington, Warwickshire respectively; died before 1699. Children of William and Mary - William and Nathaniel who lived in London, Thomas, immigrant to America, Billerica, MA 1690, John, Joseph and James (d. 1733) who lived in Coventry.

I thought you might be interested in the following link to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Records Office (SBTRO). It lists a letter from "Daniel Pollard to S[amuel] Bird stating that he is the oldest member of Coventry branch of Pollards." http://www.dswebhosting.info/Shakespeare/dserve.exe?&dsq...;)) I've only just started trying to track the Pollard family tree - I discovered my G-G-G-G-G-grandmother was a Pollard of Coventry at Christmas last. It seems that a John Pollard (not your one, but the son of Stephen & Anna Maria (nee Catherwood) Pollard ) died intestate (ie left no will - & no obvious heir) and the SBTRO has copies of the solicitors papers trying to identify the heirs. Makes interesting reading, plus they are very helpful at the SBTRO and are geared up to quotes for copies of documents over the net etc.
