About Thomas Putnam, III

Note by Robert Hanscom (a direct descendant of Thomas Putnam III) -- 9 May 2016:

Thomas Putnam III was born in Salem Village [now Danvers], MA, 9 Feb 1681, the second child of Thomas Putnam Jr. and Ann (Carr) Putnam. He was 11 years old when his sister, mother, and father became inextricably involved in the Salem witchcraft hysteria. Following the almost simultaneous deaths of his parents in 1699, he (age 18) and his sister Ann (age 20) took responsibility for the care and upbringing of their eight younger siblings, ages between 16 and 6 months. After Thomas married Elizabeth Whipple on 10 Apr 1705, his sister Ann took full responsibility for the younger siblings.

Thomas and Elizabeth (Whipple) Putnam lived in Salem Village all their lives. They produced 11 children born between the years of 1706 and 1729. Thomas and Elizabeth were admitted into the Salem Village church on 3 August 1712.

Thomas' will, dated 22 Mar 1754, does not name his wife, but leaves bequests to his four surviving children (seven had predeceased him): Elizabeth Farrington, Anna Gardner, Samuel Putnam, and Ruth Kimball.

Thomas Putnam III died in Salem Village about June 1757, age 76. His will was submitted to probate on 15 July 1757.
