Married Latisha (Lettie) Fann June 1836; father of ten children, two of which died in the Civil War: Charles F. and John T. Rich. The other children were Martha Jane, Sarah Ann, Elijah A. J., Susan L., Augustus Myles, George Washington, Carolina, and Wrilla Rich.

Thomas J. Rich was shot in the left hip November 26, 1864, and died the next month in Macon, Ga. as result of the wound rec'd. in the Civil War.
