He is the descendant of an 1820 Settler family. He married the granddaughter of a prominent Voortrekker woman pioneer, Anna Scheepers. His DN and the fact that his gravestone wording is in English, give me the impression that he and his descendants did not Afrikanerize. It is not clear from the married surnames of his daughters which population group they married into though and such deductions may not be reliable.
However, he is one of quite a few SA born Englishmen I found that had Boer republic loyalty. He was captured on his farm and sent to Cape Town for deportation. Whether this actually happened is not known.
The uniform could have been of the Oranje-Vrijstaat Spoorwegen (if spelled Oranje Vrij Staat Spoorwegen
The full profile picture shows a mourning band. The photo was probably taken after the death of his first wife as he still looks relatively young.
He farmed near Dewetsdorp but died in a "dwelling house" in Alberton, according to my understanding of the word dwelling it must have been his own.
