About Thomas Ray Squires
I was born in McAllister, Pittsburg Co, OK on 11/13/1945. May father was 46 and my mother was 36 at the time. I had a twin sister named Fay but she died in infancy. I was the last of their children. My father was a farmer. I served in World War II, as I was in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. I was on the USS Princeton when it was sunk by the Japonese Navy forces on October 24th, 1944. I married Hilda Belle Handcock on 11/15/1945 when she was 17, in Fresno, CA. At the time, I was 20 and lived in Bell Gardens, CA. She lived in Selma, CA. I served as a fireman for Stanislaus County, and an article about my helping to rescue a drowning woman from the San Joaquin river near the town of Gustine appears in the Merced Sun-Star dated 5/20/1952. We moved to Norwalk, CA in approximately 1953. I soon went to work for General Installation in Sepulveda, CA, as a plumber. I raised my family while I was employed by them. I also worked for myself as a plumber, and at one point, because of health issues (I had rhumatoid arthritis, and later diabetis), we purchased a liquor store from Hilda's Aunt Nellie (Handcock) Hammond, and we ran that for awhile in Yuma, AZ. We lived in AZ about 8 years before moving back to CA, where we lived in Norco. Ultimately, I retired in Paso Robles. I truly enjoyed the years I lived at Naciemento Lake, and especially when the kids & grandkids would visit.
